Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Post by iCad » April 28th, 2020, 9:15 pm

So this is kind of bizarre-o, especially because it only happens sometimes. But here's the deal:

When I have fairy Sims who travel, they often take their fairy houses with them because, hey, it's portable and it's bed + food, great for tomb-raiding and stuff. OR, in Oasis Landing, I've placed a community lot classed as a small park that has a fairy house for fairy visitors to use instead of the stupidly-large "visitor's center" that I hate. This will usually work just fine, but sometimes (and only sometimes) when I send the fairy traveler to use his/her fairy house, Woohooer throws an error. Once this happens the first time, it happens all the time going forward in that particular save, but only in vacation worlds or Oasis Landing (and I assume it would happen in the Uni world, too), never in the Sim's homeworld. The only way to fix it that I've found is to revert to a previous save where it hadn't happened. (For this reason, among others, I have 10 different archived saves for each game I'm playing, and I rotate through them.) Once I revert, it's fine again and often the error never happens again in that save.

I can't figure out what exactly is triggering this, and because it doesn't happen all the time, it's hard to troubleshoot by, say, removing mods and systematically testing. But, it just happened to me the other day, with a fairy Sim visiting Oasis Landing. I reverted to the directly-previous save (which was also in Oasis Landing) and played forward without the error recurring, but I kept the script error, so maybe someone who knows how to read these things can tell me what's triggering this when it happens so that I can maybe fix it?

It's possible that I might have an outdated mod (or five) because some I've had for a very long time. When I looked them up when I recently started to play the game more seriously, not all of them expressly said they'd been updated for 1.67/1.69, but they seem to work and may not need to be updated...but maybe they do, I don't know. Delphy's Dashboard isn't showing any conflicts when I run it, at least.

Anyway, here's the error log thingy:

Code: Select all

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Post by igazor » April 28th, 2020, 10:59 pm

These look like animation errors to me, the ones being reported on here are not about woohooing specifically but about sleeping in the fairy house and drinking pollen punch but the Woohooer mod is throwing the error because it needs to calculate which locations on the lot are valid for woohoo. Do you have some kind custom fairy house in play?

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Post by iCad » April 28th, 2020, 11:53 pm

Nope, no custom fairy houses. Generally, I use the more-expensive fairy castle, but I've had it happen with the cheaper fairy bungalow, too. I think it is something to do with animations, though, yes, because it happens right when they'd normally spin around to change to their glowy ball state. I once thought it was because of positioning. Like, it didn't like it if the house was on the diagonal or if it had been placed with moveobjects on or off-grid and/or on a non-standard angle with the ALT key, but I've had it happen where none of those things were the case. And, like I said, it only happens when the Sim isn't in their homeworld, so it has to be something to do with that, too. Somehow. I'm stumped. It's been going on for a while and since I save a lot it's not that big a deal to revert to a save that happened 15 minutes before, but I'd just kinda like to know why it's happening...

And nope, nothing to do with whoohooing specifically. It's always been when I've commanded a single Sim to sleep/nap or drink pollen punch or throw a fairy house party. But it's always Woohooer that throws the error.

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

It's failing to create a visual effect. I suspect the travel system is mauling the fairy's data it like it does a lot of other data and restarting the game fixes it. You could try resetting the fairy which may fix it as well.

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Post by iCad » May 1st, 2020, 3:35 am

Resetting the Sim doesn't fix it, unfortunately. Neither does resetting the fairy house or resetting the lot. I seem to recall the error continuing to happen across play sessions, but I could be remembering wrong, as I usually immediately exit to the main menu without saving when it happens and then just load up the previous save. The next time it happens, though, I'll save and exit the game and reload, see if that does fix it.

Thanks as always for the info. :)

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Post by iCad » May 3rd, 2020, 3:33 pm

Sorry for the double post, but I'm adding info, so hopefully it's OK.

I was playing this same save yesterday for a bit, actually hoping for this error to occur so I could do some testing. For once, my game cooperated and errored when I wanted it to. :) This time, it happened when the fairy had brought the fairy house from his own home lot with him while traveling to, in this case, Isla Paradiso. The same animation error happened, so I did a "Save As" so that I could do a bit of testing in a known-"broken" save. What I found out:
  • Exiting the game entirely and reloading doesn't fix the situation. The animation remains broken once it has happened the first time.
  • The animation error only happens when trying to enter the fairy house. The Sim can do other actions where he transforms into glowy ball mode -- like, for instance, playfully pestering another Sim -- just fine.
  • It still happens if I remove all but NRAAS mods, so whatever the issue is, it's not caused by any outdated mods I have, if I have any. Although I suppose it's still possible that an outdated mod might be the initial trigger of this situation.
  • It does not happen if Woohooer is not installed. Which I suppose is obvious, since it's an error thrown by Woohooer. But I suppose I wanted to make sure that there wasn't something fundamentally broken in the save rather than just "broken" by a mod.
So, in the end, I'm pretty much convinced that Chain's suspicion is correct, that something sometimes happens to the fairy's data in the travelling process. I know that Traveler fixes a lot of the issues that unmodded traveling causes, but apparently not this one. (Unsurprising, since it's a pretty obscure/odd situation!) Whatever the damage is, it's apparently something that Woohooer relies on to make a calculation, and since it only happens when attempting to enter a fairy house, even if the reason for doing so has nothing to do with woohooing, I can only think that it must be because a fairy house is a valid woohoo location. I didn't test this -- because I thought of it later, but I've since deleted the save, unfortunately, so I can't go in and test this now -- but I suspect that if one were to turn off fairy houses as a valid woohoo location in Woohooer, then this error wouldn't happen,,,but obviously I don't want to do that when playing fairies, especially if the ONLY valid location for woohooing for them on a given lot is a fairy house. :) The only thing that troubles me with this hypothesis is that, sometimes when the error happens, it's not always happening the first time I try to use a fairy house in the traveler world but often the second or third time. If the issue is lost data, then I would think that the error would happen the first time a fairy attempted to enter the fairy house. But, maybe not. I know nothing about coding and all that because, dammit Jim, I'm a musician, not a code monkey! :)

ANYWAY! The upshot for any others out there who use both Woohooer and Traveler to play peripatetic, vagabond fairies who travel with only a fairy house and the clothes on their back is: Archived, versioned backups. Lots of them. And save often. So that, if the error happens, you can revert to a save before it happened and play forward without the error happening again. (Hopefully.) In games that I care about keeping long-term, I have my auto-saver thingy set to save every 15 real-time minutes with 10 saves retained. Yeah, it's kind of annoying to save that often, but if this error (or any other one) happens, I can revert to a save that is, at most, 15 minutes old. That peace of mind overcomes any annoyance I feel over all the saving. :)

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

It does not happen if Woohooer is not installed.
You're certain of this? Errortrap should take over the reporting when Woohooer was uninstalled. And once the issue is triggered you're completely unable to to go in a fairy house again no matter what?

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

I am certain. If Woohooer is not loaded into the game, the animation error does not happen at all even if it's already been "triggered," so it seems there's nothing for ErrorTrap to report in Woohooer's absence. The error has never happened in any save where Woohooer is not in use. (I have one of those now and have had many others in the past.) That's not to say that Woohooer causes the initial error, though. If it was the cause, I'd think that it would happen all the time when Woohooer is installed, but it doesn't.

Since this doesn't happen all the time, my totally-lacking-in-evidence gut feeling is that the trigger is something external to Woohooer. I think what's happening is that Woohooer is exposing something that probably happens but that wouldn't be "seen" and/or wouldn't affect anything in a Woohooer-less situation. After giving it some more thought, I don't think it's just the act of traveling shredding data, though. Because often, once I revert to a save that happened after traveling but before the Woohooer error, the error doesn't subsequently happen at all. If it were the act of traveling causing the problem, then I'd think it would happen again in that world, after reverting. So I think it's probably something else that's the trigger. I have no idea what, though. It could very well be the fault of some other mod I have, but it's hard for me to determine that since this doesn't happen all the time. I can't troubleshoot by removing all mods and then putting them back in piecemeal until the error happens, for instance.

And yes, the fairy cannot enter a fairy house at all in any non-homeworld once the Woohooer error happens. (It might be specific to only that fairy or it might be all fairies affected. I don't know because I only have one traveler per save-game since the tombs in the WA worlds won't reset for different travelers.) The fairy house always works just fine in the fairy's homeworld, though, even once the error has been triggered "off-world," so if I'm wrong and it is ultimately a case of data shredding, then that data must somehow be restored in the process of traveling home.

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

Do you have a save from EA worlds where this error is reproducible? Or can I somewhat easily reproduce it by traveling with a fairy with woohooer installed?

Woohooer error when using a fairy house when traveling...

I do not, currently. Because I'm a dummy and deleted the one I messed around with a little. :) And then, since I did a purge of TS2 CC, I emptied the recycle bin, too. But later today, I'll play one of my traveling fairies and see if I can get it to happen again. If I have success I'll upload the save for you to pick apart. I could give you two, actually, if it would be helpful. One where the error has happened and the one immediately prior to the error happening, which is the save I'd revert to and then play forward. Maybe you'd be able to see some difference between them?

In the meantime, if it's not a case of some outdated mod I have or some other quirkiness of my game alone causing this to happen, I would think you ought to be able to reproduce it, but it might take some playing on your part because it doesn't happen all the time and I've not been able to discern any kind of pattern to it. It tends to happen more often inside tombs, but that could just be because when I'm traveling a Sim I'm often tomb-raiding. I've had it happen in Oasis Landing as well as in tomb-less custom and EA worlds that I've used Traveler to travel to, though, so I'm pretty sure it can happen anywhere. It's also happened both when I've had the fairy use their own house that they transported in their inventory and when I've traveled to a world where I've put down a lot with a fairy house for them to use.
