Trait Compatibility?

Post by JohnL83 » September 3rd, 2019, 9:37 am

I know we have long ago established that "Sim-logic" is an oxymoron...that said:
I can't believe after 2 years I never noticed this, but exactly what is the "logic" behind a Sim being an "animal lover" and them being incompatible with a cat, dog or horse person (equestrian)? My Sims are getting negative reactions when discovering this about each other and I honestly never noticed before. If I saw it happen I didn't register it at the time. I didn't use these traits often with my own Sims and if i did they were always just "animal lovers". But I have recently tried to be a bit less predicable with traits and am trying out all kinds of variations.

Wouldn't someone who loves animals be compatible with someone who loves dogs or any animal? (I sort of get the idea that a cat vs a dog person would give a slight negative reaction) Is the thinking behind this just because it's assumed the, cat.dog/horse person dislikes any other animals? Because this logic is far from sound. I'm more of a cat person, but I love animals in general and have had several dogs and loved them greatly. It's just a personal thing because I find dogs to be a bit too needy and cumbersome and I like a cat's aloofness and tidiness. (I also used to have a job that kept me away a lot and cat's are a bit more self sufficient when being left alone for 10 hours a day...)

Anyway I just wanted to get this off my chest. Feel free to rant about other silly things in this topic if you wish. ;)

It's not so much a lapse in logic in this case, it's that the Dog and Cat Person traits are poorly named. These sims will love dogs (or cats) exclusively and shun other types of pets as well as humans, possibly. From what you have described above, by TS3 standards you are an Animal Lover with a preference for cats, not a Cat Person. :)

Ahhh yes, thanks for that. Sometimes the elevator doesn't go all the way to the top these days. :P Still, I feel a dog lover and animal lover should still be compatible. I sort of get the dog person vs cat person, But Sim my animal lover started dating a cat person and they recoiled at learning these two things about one another, which kind of bugged me. They seemed to get over it though because they did an auto-woo-hoo in the photo booth at the arcade, so no worries. :-o

As my beloved grandmother used to say, all's well that ends in a photo booth auto-woohoo. Or something like that. I'm afraid she wasn't very lucid through her entire elder life stage...but we loved her anyway. :)

This is something EA did and I also agree it's ridiculous. I feel like they did it in a poor attempt to add depth to what are shallow traits gameplay wise.

Depth? While I appreciate the logic, if you can call it that, I see the two traits as more of an intentional joke. Did we not all grow up in towns where Crazy Cat Lady (didn't have to be female, hence Cat "Person") lived with her 12 cats in a 13-bedroom mansion on top of a steep hill, shunned visitors of all kinds, birds always flew the other way when she was nearby, and we all spoke of her in hushed tones? My sense is that is exactly what the in-game Cat and Dog People would consider heaven, at the expense of a very large household of humans that could make more efficient use of the property.

These aren't Cat/Dog Lovers, they are Cat/Dog People. Real animal lovers would be thrilled to share their joy with others, seek to be veterinarians if such a thing existed without a custom career, beam with happiness when the neighborhood kids stopped by to play with their kitties/puppies, be invited to bring different breeds into the schools to teach others more about them, etc. That's NOT what I see in those two traits, only in the Animal Lover one -- and maybe Equestrian, but I've never had that one in play myself. :)

@Chain_Reaction - Is this something that can be changed with a script mod?

You can use a tuning mod. Trait incompatibility is defined using a rather odd design choice that doesn't make it at all apparent what the values even do. If you open the Traits XML in S3PE you'll see a SetNumber under the TraitList definition for that trait. Notice DogPerson, CatPerson and Equestrian all have 12. If a Sim has a trait that is found to be in this 'set' of numbers, they will trigger the negative reaction. You can remove the SetNumber node entirely to stop it.

Thank you so much! I never dreamed it could be that easy :)

Okay Igazor, now your just scaring me...LOL Indeed there was a cat lady in our neighborhood when I was a kid and she was an amazing woman, Miss Edna was well loved, but OMG the smell from her house! None of us could bare to hang out much there, but she was the coolest lady otherwise and we all loved her. I used to help out at her home sometimes and ya never got used to the smell! She had a small 2 bedroom cottage and 17-20 cats! She took great care of them, but there was just no escaping the potent smell of cat urine. :|

I knew cats lived a bit longer than dogs, but I'd had no idea they could live into their 20's. (The longest I had a cat live from kitten to natural death was 18 years...I had Socks...a gray cat with white feet I got as a kitten when I was 14) Anyway, Edna's oldest cat lived to be 24 and several lived to be over 20! Yes, she kept track of every one of them and had their birthdays in a calendar, or in many cases, their adopted day. (sometimes folks would dump a box of kittens at her door and she'd find homes for some, but not always all of them) She's gone now of course, but she became a second mother to my sister and I and a few other neighbor kids. She moved into a rest home when she was 80...it was heartbreaking seein her leave her beloved cats behind. At that point she still had 8 of them. We visited her in the rest home often, up until she passed when I was 35 and she was 85.
