Connecting / fencing lots together

Post by Kukko69 » March 19th, 2024, 10:22 am

I'm wondering if it is somehow possible to combine several lots together in a way that the small gap (at least one square in-between) can be "sewed shut". Preferably with a fence (object) that works as a blockage for sims (horses). I've tried the small piece of the dark wooden fence that comes in Edit World, but that won't stop sims from walking right through it.

What I'm getting at is, that I want large pastures that take two or three 64x64 lots, placed closely next to one another, but as the game won't allow, those lots cannot touch each other. I'd like the horses to be able to move from one pasture lot to another, but not get away "behind the fences" and escape through the small gaps left in-between. Also, it should look nice and natural, so nothing out of ordinary like giant rocks etc.

Is there a mod that can accomplish this, or some good small enough item that cannot be walked through?

Probably not. Object footprint can't extend beyond lot borders. Even if the fence was modified to have a smaller footprint then sims would walk through it. Objects placed in edit world don't rebuild world routing either as you saw.

Afw, darn... I feared as much.

Well, one other option (though not really a good one) is that I could use (in play mode) invisible fence in some places. This doesn't solve my problem, but would come handy anyways. Does anybody know if such invisible fence is made as CC?

The only way you could get close to what you want to do is in CAW. But you could end up with some very odd routing behavior I remember trying something similar before and had to undo it due to the routing behavior.

Invisible fence at MTS. A combination of using this to close in the lots minus a couple of openings + the fake fence between them, perhaps? The horses won't understand this in an autonomous way, but that would at least play to the illusion if you put decorative gates in the openings. They'll clip through them when directed, but won't route through on their own.

I guess I've never placed enough decor in Edit Town to notice it doesn't have collision :-o

I've personally given up on this. The gaps can't even be closed by giant rocks, and the routing is terrible. My latest attempt was placing a garden lot (community lot) behind a residential lot. Even with adjacent gaps in the fence, sims wouldn't just go through those gaps, but take a huge detour to the road and then come in from walking between the lots to the entry point. That was slower than just having two road exits for each of the lots.

I'm curious if any tuning that influences routing distances could help dissuade sims routing from snapping to roads/footpaths, like BoringBones' Project Get Out. I've had no issue with loose lots in roadless worlds, sims route between them about as decently as I could hope for, so their gravitation to roads stands out to me as something that could potentially be manipulated.

Relatedly to the OP, BoringBones actually has some Reshade presets too. Most browsers should have an inbuilt translator to help navigate the blog. These ones are very desaturated in style.

Is there no way we could bypass the restriction to placing lots right next to each other, border to border?

Also, I'm attempting to create a thicker version of a base game fence (about half a tile wide, so you'll need one on each lot), just to close up those gaps between lots.
