Enhanced genetics without enabling Story Progression?

Post by Echoweaver » June 20th, 2023, 11:26 pm

Haha, a silly question.

I'm toying with trying out some different story progressions out there -- the only ones I know of are Awesomemod and simler's core. But one thing I'd really hate to give up is the advanced genetics. But there are some features of the SP mod that aren't exactly about progression. I'd really hate to give up advanced genetics. If the actual story progression part of SP is disabled, is it possible to still use advanced genetics when producing new offspring?

While I can't speak on the SP functionality part, Lazy Duchess has a 'Random Sim Fixes' mod that is core-independent and covers at least the important tweaks for generated sims and a few for age up.
I also believe both Awesome and Simler's mods have their own genetics tweaks- SP mentions Awesome in the documentation for skin blending and LD credits Simler for their mod covering some of the issues.

I've been using Neuroblazer's Random Genetics mod for a long time now (works also with NRaas SP). It's not totally random, as the name may suggest, but produces random blends of the parents' facial sliders positions for the children, and up to 10% outside of the parents' range of features. For births, even those babies you let construct at the hospital or produce via Master Controller features, the mod works automatically. You can also use it manually on existing sims, provided they have two parents with available genetic data (dead is fine, other world isn't). I think the creator had some people harass them and they took the mod down, but it's still available on the Wayback machine (I just now tried it and the download there still works):

Thanks. I'm taking a look at Random Genetics. I do have Random Sim Fixes, but I think that's primarily about the zero-slider problem for randomly generated sims. I didn't think it had much to do with genetic inheritance.

I really like that NRaas Advanced Genetics has a chance of inheriting from grandparents. IIRC, the EA system only inherits features from parents but has a chance of inheriting just hair or eye color from grandparents. Putting grandparents in the mix really helps keep the gene pool in a long-running game from stagnating.

For hair I use,
Consorts hair mod, with it you can blend the parents hair to get more interesting colours.

I mainly change it manually, but you can set Consorts mod to do it automatically for new borns too
and of course I also use SP advanced genetics.

I think I have Consort's Aging, but not the hair mod. That looks worth trying.
