Title letter length for saves - how to enhance?

I really don't like that there is a character limit for entering a save name, max is 23.

Does anyone know if this setting can be changed and where?

Otherwise it is not practical to change the save game folder names manually in the Saves folder

Title letter length for saves - how to enhance?

Post by 95mmaa » December 23rd, 2022, 7:45 pm

Well, if it helps, I do this thing where, when I need to name a save, I remove vowel letters from some of the words to try fit in as much as possible. For example, a save with a birthday party at the Relevart household (Yes! I saved a copy of Emit Relevart, the Time Traveler NPC, in CAS because he's like my favourite Sim and I wanted to give him a life, but don't worry, I removed the Time Traveler occult status from him, so it's all good! ;)) can be named:

"Crescent Cove - Rlvrt - Bdy"

With 'Crescent Cove' being my own custom world I made for myself, 'Rlvrt' as in 'Relevart', and 'Bdy' as a shortening or abbreviation of 'Birthday'. Spaces are added/removed whenever necessary.

Title letter length for saves - how to enhance?

Thanks for reply.

Well, I know how to shorten parts in the save name. F.i. I often backup save folders, but when you move or copy them to a Save-Backup Folder, then it is necessary that the names are decent for sorting, because the folder dates will all be changed to the date you moved them.

Thats why I name my saves like this, in my backup folder the file names will always sort in the right order descending. So I can easily clean up older ones I don't need anymore. I often keep older RESET ones.

2212_ = YearMonth I play
SV_ = abbreviation of Worldname, like Sunset Valey or Moonlight Fals etc.
a_ = serie for a sim week (when a new month I play starts, I will begin with a again)
1_ = in-game days 1 for Monday to 7 for Sunday
05-40 = in-game clock time
_xxx = for special events if needed

2212_SV_b_5_21-43
2212_SV_b_1_05-15_RESET (town reset via MC)
2212_SV_a_7_21-40_Bday (for birthday)
2212_SV_a_7_21-39
2212_SV_a_3_21-38_RETU (Retuner changes)
2212_SV_a_2_21-42
2212_SV_a_1_21-41
2211_MF_b_3_21-43
2211_MF_a_7_21-40
2211_MF_a_4_21-39_Mod (new Mod added)
2211_MF_a_3_21-38
2211_MF_a_2_21-42

But you see, 23 letters are still not much, I would like to have at least 30 or 35.
So does someone know if it is hardcoded or is there a way to change the limit somewhere?

I don't think there is a modification to change the length of the save file titles. I think creatively naming the files is the best that can be done.

However, if you aren't opposed to a little extra work, you could always keep a text file log of the saves. I do this when there is something I need to remember about a specific save which is important. Otherwise, I try to keep my save files titles as short as possible. For example:

v167_BP_Harding_00
(Game version, Home World, Active Sim Household and save number)

If my Sim travels my save file title looks like this:
v167_BP_Harding_01_CH
(CH=China), (FR=France) or (EG=Egypt) and so on for traveler added worlds.

If anything important happens in the game, I add a (.log) text file inside of the folder I keep this world's back-up files in. I can refer to these notes to refresh my memory of what was going on at the time of the save should I have to ever use the back-up.

In addition to the text log, I also use screenshots. I double date my files, so I'll always know when an event happened. If my sim celebrates a birthday or birth of a child, I screenshot the event and add both the in-game date and the real-world date (Week 12-Day 4)-(123122). I run maintenance of this game on a schedule, so I don't need to log those unless something goes wrong...which it so far hasn't.

Just a different 'save' perspective.

Sunshine_25 thanks, yeah it is sad that there is maybe no way, only a developer like Chain_Reaction can tell :)

As sims 3 gets no updates (maybe 1.69 which I will not use ever, because of using CASP) there is no need to add this in my save file names.

I am happy with my way of naming, I move my saves for backup, so my saves folder is not overloaded (the game loades all when starting), I keep only 10 inside. Well you can always change the save names in the folder longer if needed, but I hoped to get a hint if there is a setting somewhere in the game files.

As I don't travel or rotate families, I am playing a legacy family, it is not so complicated for me.
Notes for birthday and such are not really important to me, I never go back to an older save (only if something went wrong, but this would be only the same day in-game), I always export all of my sims when they age up to YA in CAS so I have them all for ever, with S3pe I export the picture of the sim named sim name and save them under a picture folder for male and female, which is really helpful, because you see how the sims look, most sim packages I then move to a backup folder too, because of loading purpose :)

For me the regular reset town on every sunday is the more important and builds or changes in mod settings in-game I add special notes at the end.

But it is interesting how diffrently all people play :)
