switching to pc

Post by sheridanhoughton » July 22nd, 2022, 11:42 pm

I have just been given a new MacBook pro, which runs like a train. I updated my game for 64 bit and was really disappointed that the game no longer allows my sims to swim in rivers or the sea, catch fish in rivers or the sea, or scuba dive, as these were a big part of my game.

so I tried sims 4, with the equivalent to island paradise EP. but not only can you only swim in the sea only in the world that came with that EP, the worlds are so small, I will run out of room for my sims after a few generations. and it is really difficult playing without all the control that I have over other sims in the neighbourhood that I have with all your wonderful mods. (thanks)

so I am thinking of using bootcamp or parallels and playing the PC version of sims 3. but does anyone know if I will need to buy PC versions of the game and EPs again?

thanks

Once you own one version of the game (Mac vs. PC) and have it registered, you own the rights to the other version by way of Origin. Repurchasing is only a thing if you refuse to use Origin and/or wish to run the Steam version.

Does your MacBook Pro have an Intel chip processor or one of the newer ones like the M1s? Bootcamping is not possible with the newer ones but can still be done on the Intels. Parallels is not likely to produce an enjoyable game experience. If you can Bootcamp, you will need to purchase a standalone license for Windows 10 (or I guess 11).

Well, there is a way of getting unstuck but I'm afraid it involves buying a mid-range PC. They may not cost as much as you think in order to be TS3 capable.

Not what you wanted to hear, I am sure, but you're of course most welcome regardless. :|

Actually if you have the new M1 Macs you can use crossover. It makes for an enjoyable experience - but it's subscription based as far as I know.

Crossover is Wine with service attached, isn't it? As far as I know they help people with it and also fix a lot of bugs but it all goes back to Wine. So paying a subscription is great because it is moving the project along for everyone, but if you can't pay a subscription you can also just use wine. I don't know if helpers like Lutris exist for Mac too, but it should be possible to find a tutorial somewhere to follow even if you have no idea what you are doing with just plain wine.

Spot on! I never learned how to use Wine but if you find out how then you can play the PC version of The Sims 3 with no hiccups whatsoever. Let me know what you find as I have an M1 MBP as well :)

I am using Wine a lot but I am on Linux, I don't know how well it runs on Macs. Sims3 runs perfectly on wine on Linux, but I don't know how good the drivers on Mac are and vulcan support. Of course you could also look up if your Macbook can run Linux.. Linux is free and awesome

Sounds like witchcraft, sorcery, and voodoo to me. But that's also what they said about Bootcamp back in the day. Carry on, then. :)
