Game crashing in custom worlds

Post by CarlosZ12268 » July 6th, 2021, 2:31 pm

I've just reinstalled the game and have been checking several custom worlds, looking for one to settle in for a new playthrough. After I began to get random CTDs, however, I decided to strip down all my CC to find the ones responsible for the crashes. Unfortunately, unless I messed something else up, the nraas mods seem to be triggering them. The notable example is ErrorTrap, which caused an instant CTD in the world of Mayfield Springs as soon as it loads, just by paning the camera to the lower right of the map. I've since removed it, which seemed to work but I've since found there to be another module that triggers CTD that I've yet to isolate.

Other crashes have also been happening in other CC worlds, particularly after moving/choosing houseshold. Before I began isolating the mods, it would happen as soon as the household finished loading, such as in Setra and Oceanview. Now, I've attempted to load in Setra and managed to select household succesfully, run the game for a few in-game minutes but got a crash as soon as I moved the camera to load one particular household of the map. I've yet to find out which file specifically triggers this.

Right now, my packages folder contains the following files:

NRaas_Career
NRaas_MasterController
NRaas_MasterControllerCheats
NRaas_MasterControllerIntegration
NRaas_Overwatch
NRaas_Overwatch_Tuning
NRaas_Porter
NRaas_Relativity
NRaas_StoryProgression
NRaas_StoryProgressionCareer
NRaas_StoryProgressionMeanies
NRaas_StoryProgressionPopulation
NRaas_StoryProgressionRelationship

So yeah, this is currently where I'm at. How should I proceed from here on? There is still the possibility that I made a silly mistake, but I'm not sure where to take it from here or how to fix this. Is it normal for nraas mods to crash on custom worlds?

NRaas mods shouldn't be causing these crashes, assuming of course that they're all up to date and you're running patch 1.67 or higher. For the former, you can redownload the mods from here: only the newest versions are available. For the latter, you can see your version number in the lower left corner of the launcher; please list it if it's not 1.67/1.69/1.70.

Otherwise, try creating a new user folder: move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents\Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, open the launcher to create a new folder, install one custom world that's been a problem, move over your mods, and see whether the world runs properly. You can add your other content to the new folder later, but for now, it's easier to troubleshoot if you keep things simple.

Usually mods and some CC behave very strangely if they don't match the game version. Are you sure that everything is fine in this regard? Also, what happens in the standard worlds? Are there any crashes?

I've redownloaded everything just to make sure, and was still getting crashes. I'll try making a new user folder.

I was mostly focusing on custom ones because I wanted features from all expansions. I was under the assumption they'd likely not crash, but I didn't test. Just made a brand new sims 3 folder and am going to try re-adding the mods to test.

It should be noted that Setra in particular is a beautiful world that is, for most players, not very playable because it is too large and intricate. No matter how good one's system is, the game is still 32-bit and just under 4 GB of RAM usage is the limit. If the game demands more than ~3.7 GB, a crash or Error12 upon trying to save is just around the corner.

I'm not as familiar with Oceanview, but on first glance it does look to be about as large and complicated as Setra. Are any of the custom worlds you are trying to play perhaps more in the medium or small size ranges?

These words can sometimes be made more playable by severely limiting the resident population and bulldozing like half the map, but that kind of defeats the purpose of playing them in the first place.

Welp I'm at a loss now. I've made a whole new folder for the game, installed just the store worlds and Mayfield springs, loaded it and it crashed just as I entered a household. No mods other than the standard nointro + nobuildsparkles.

I honestly don't get it. If it isn't CC then I don't know what it is. What could cause the game to crash like this?

Unfortunately, sometimes custom worlds just don't work out. I tried one recently, both unpopulated and with 2 different populated save files, and it was either laggy to an unplayable extent, or I got a CTD. I REALLY wanted to play that one, tried a few different things to get it to work, but I just don't have it in me to fully troubleshoot problematic custom worlds. There are SO MANY fantastic custom worlds that load and run well with no extra effort required.

Are you definitely having no crashing when loading an EA world? If not, for testing, you might try a very small, empty custom world like Pixie Gardens or Bigger Builder's Island, and place a household in that world to play. It might give you an idea if it's a custom world or a size/population issue.

There may well be something else going on here. What do you have for a graphics card (GPU) and have you taken the steps required to cap its fps rates to the refresh rate of your monitor, then checked in-game (if you can get a game to not crash right after startup) to make sure the fps is staying capped?

TS3 being an older game has no functional built-in fps limiter. Wildly running fps rates can lead to graphics glitches, screen tears, poor game performance, crashes, and can ultimately burn out the hardware by making it run far too hard for no reason.

I have a Geforce 930M, and have the FPS capped with 3booter.
I've since reinstalled the game fresh. After done the initial optimization steps, I installed the two worlds mentioned and so far I've had no crashes. I will attempt to reintroduce the nraas mods and see how it goes.
