Broken tutorial links

Post by Echoweaver » September 11th, 2020, 9:53 am

I wandered over to the Design Discussion / Tutorials link on the sidebar: Design-Discussion

That link is fine, but it looks like all the links to tutorials are broken?

Anywhere where you see a "+" in those links, try changing it to a "-".

Broken tutorial links

Unfortunately after doing that you'll find they are all pretty useless as they are missing code that didn't convert to the new site. It's one of the last broken things from the site relocation that I'm still working on. I'd use the wayback machine for them for now.

OK! Thanks. I'll see what I can find. I'm just idly browsing anyway.

Broken tutorial links

What is the link to the old Nraas site? I actually cannot find it so that I can look at the wayback machine.

Once I get my game up and running, would it be difficult to copy and paste some of these tutorials to the new website we have now from the wayback machine? I have not looked at how to edit things. If it's not too hard, I can look into some of these broken links for tutorials as well as some other items I have found in the game FAQs. I probably can get to it the middle of next month.

I noticed a broken link for Ultimate Careers and wished I had the tutorial. I have the original lots that J4Ks made, so I can pass that along on the site if he is no longer very active at Nraas.

I'm embarrassed to say I don't have a whole lot to do and this would be a nice way to occupy my time again.

I hope I'm not thread jacking here. If so, I will start a new topic.

Our Wikispaces site on the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20180128060 ... es.com:80/

I always jump to a date before March 2018 when I can, like the one above, so as not to be bothered with "Wikispaces will be shutting down soon!" messages that no longer make any sense. Sometimes that backfires when I am looking for a more recent entry than that, but the tutorials were not really being edited much beyond the beginning of that year.

I believe you will find that this isn't a matter of copying and pasting or we would have fixed those already. This site is structured very differently than Wikispaces was and we tend to have to wait for Chain to readjust things before we can work with them properly.

J4Ks retired from NRaas somewhere around three years ago. If he's reading this from afar (so to speak), we really need him to log back in just to say hello. :)

Ha. Yeah, I actually did this, though for now it's just to browse around and fantasize about what I'd do if I had the time

It's a more extensive set of tutorials than I realized. I set up an environment when I was playing 3 years ago. I keep tipping into script modding and then backing out again :).

Broken tutorial links

I have fixed all the broken links on that page, however the tutorials still have missing code. I'm afraid it's not as simple as copy and paste as igazor noted. The tutorials are here but missing their code. The problem is the site doesn't allow any code in the pages and strips it out for security reasons. Given the software we are running I have things configured to be extra paranoid and plus this site seeming to be a big target for hackers already. I have to adjust both the scripting and editor to only allow XML which I have to do carefully or I open the door to Russia or China.

Broken tutorial links

I'm not sure I understand the issue. What executable code is in the tutorials? When I page through them on the Wayback, it just looks like a collection of text and links. It looks like there are a couple of links to external files. Code displayed in text is just text... isn't it? How could a malicious actor execute displayed text on a website?

There's no executable code in the tutorials. The problem is allowing any code to be displayed on the site or entered into the editor has to be filtered so that malicious code doesn't make it's way in later.
