Reactions to traits?

No one knows everything this mod can do. Did you know you can tune the size of your sims nostrils with this mod? I'm kidding.

Reactions to traits?

Post by JohnL83 » March 26th, 2021, 3:24 pm

Can we tune this? How certain traits react to others?

I'm only interested in stopping the Animal Lover trait from being incompatible with loving dogs, cats, or horses. I mean come on EA?
Sim-one: "Hi, do you love animals?" Sim-two: "No! I only like dogs!" Sim-one: "Well screw you then!" Sim-two, "Yeah, same to ya bud!" ??? :-o :P

I know it's really not that big of a deal, but it's really annoying! Every other trait incompatibility makes sense for the most part, but this one bugs me because it's stupid. My couple keep trying to talk about loving dogs and loving animals and keep getting the negatives. They even own a freakin dog they both love.

Reactions to traits?

We have covered this, or something similar, in the past. There aren't Dog Lover and Cat Lover traits in TS3. There are Dog People and Cat People traits. Are these the traits being complained about?

Dog/Cat People are into dogs/cats often to the exclusion of all others, including other humans. They are not Animal Lovers, they are...well, how does "differently programmed" sound? (perhaps we should go with the more time tested diagnosis of "kooky" and stop being politically correct...)

It sounds to me like what you want to do is change these two traits into something that they are really not, which is kind of along the same lines as designing custom traits. Instead of that, why not use SP to disallow the two traits if you find them so annoying and make them all Animal Lovers? Personally I don't mind them in very small doses per world, like one or two sims each. I probably don't want them running my veterinary clinic, but they can be clients/customers if they can manage to behave themselves.

(sits down and scratches neck with foot...)

The incompatibility rings pretty true to me. It seems like, irl, many people tend to consider themselves either "dog people" or "cat people", and it isn't just about what animal they prefer, it's about what "type" of person they consider themselves to be. A cat person might even meet somebody who describes themselves as a dog person and immediately jump to the conclusion that the person is fundamentally different than themselves and dismiss them as possible relationship material (friendship or romantic) altogether. This might even be considered a Very Serious Psychological Assessment by a cat/dog person.

And then with Animal Lovers, if a person meets somebody and is like, "I'm a Cat Person" and the other person is like, "Oh yeah, I'm an Animal Lover too!" the cat person will be mentally rolling their eyes and thinking that this Animal Lover has missed the point entirely.

I find it pretty amusing that sims react this way, but if you don't like it, it would be easy enough to replace all of the specific animal traits with Animal Lover, as igazor mentioned.

I have no idea if there is a solution to this problem, but it seems to me that the developers may have mixed something up. For example, in TS3 for the console there is a "dislikes pets" trait. It's quite possible that something similar was planned in PC version, but later this idea was abandoned. Because how can you not love animals? You can hate children, nature, society, but you can't do that with animals!

Maybe someday someone will fix this whole system of traits, with reaction and compatibility, but for sure it will not be an easy job. I also have a problem with reactions, but I have a different story. An eccentric sim who works as a ghost hunter expresses his discontent and disgust at the sight of ghosts every time :|

The reaction to ghosts, every time, even if they are best friends and/or lovers, really bugs me. How does a sim see a ghost and go from "ew, ick" to woohoo within a few interactions? It seems like I turned off the "A ghost!" action in Retuner for one of my games, although I don't remember if it had the intended effect.

This sounds like a drastic measure, because I don't mind other sims reacting to them in their own way. Hm... You know, for example, if a sim works in a career as a firefighter, then he behaves like a professional and no longer throws a tantrum at the sight of fire, even if he is not brave. I mean, sometimes the developers do quite logical things, but sometimes their logic takes a day off.

As for the ghostly friends that scare your character, then here also you can find a special logic. From a certain angle, the ghosts still look creepy. Everything is visible through them and they have empty white eyes. Probably, even close relationships will not make your sims get used to their peculiarities :D

You are onto something here! I'm lost in my thoughts a lot and so I find it extremely jarring to see something I don't expect to see. Even with something that is actually very normal like coming into the kitchen and seeing one of my kids making a sandwich. I will literally scream, as if I were in a horror movie, until my brain catches up with my eyes. This is unfortunately not an exaggeration, and in fact my family members announce themselves if they hear me coming around the corner so I won't be surprised. Even that doesn't always work.

So yes, I could see being startled or upset by a ghost, no matter how many times I've seen them before. This is actually very relatable, now that you pointed this out!

I think I have a very vague memory of this now... but yeah smarty-pants, that was what I meant. I like having the dog/cat lover...I mean "people" traits. But in my apparently warped (and aging) brain a dog person would still love animals in general.
For instance, I'm a cat person, but I still love dogs and most creatures that wander the earth. I just prefer cats because their easier and less needy than dogs. If you haven't noticed I get annoyed easily. LOL So a dog, as wonderful as they can be, constantly wanting my attention gets on my nerves. But I've owned a few in my 50 years of life and they were wonderful, but now that I own a cat I like the independence of them. And I don't' feel as bad if I have to leave them home for 8-10 hours a day.

But who does that anymore these days? Okay, it's finally getting back to normal, but I'm still working at home.

Indignatgirl - LOL This bugs me too, or I have a ghost who is a coward and faints when seeing other ghosts! LOL It's really kinda funny IMO, but the ewww thing irritates me coming from other ghosts especially. But it bugs me too that two sims will beat the crap out of each other and then try to talk like nothing happened, or if someone dies at a party seconds after they stop crying they, WOOOHOO YEAH! about the party. LOL I guess I should know better than request things beyond simulated abilities. More than anything I wish sad sims would behave sad a bit longer without silly actions. Not the bawling, but just kind where like kids in S4 are bummed and slouched when you keep them from putting on the creepy bear outfit. Most of us don't scream for joy seconds after our loved ones die, unless maybe we hated them and inherited millions. ;)

SaraDarkees - Good point, the fact this game exists, even in its odd and bewildering state, is pretty amazing when one really considers what it takes to make it all work. :) Let it not be said that I don't consider that fact often. But when it comes to some developers it amazes me the things modders can do to make their game even better, which in my opinion means the company is "sleeping at the wheel", or being lazy and just trying to make money above quality.

You love dogs but own and love "a" cat? Then sorry, you are not a Cat Person. Again, you are an Animal Lover with a preference for cats. In much the same way that I see myself as an Animal Lover with a preference for dogs.

Let's review again, if we could, what a Cat Person looks like. :)

Seems a bit extreme and not what I felt the trait is all about, but okay. And what can I say? That was months ago and I got Covid in November...

My cat-person-Sims seem okay with dogs and vise versa. Or at least if they are completely opposed to them they've never shown me this. Though I suppose IRL someone may be strictly a crazy cat lady or strictly dog person (why is it always a cat lady? my macho, man-splaining brothers love cats too, as do a lot of men and why no "crazy dog dude" ? typical!)
I even had a neighbor who was a "crazy cat lady" with 15 cats that stunk up the perimeter of her house like a kennel, and even she still liked dogs. (I like pets, but never more than two of any animal in my house, I'm too OCD about odors) I've also known people with a lots of dogs (yet again with the stinky kennel house) and, well, okay, many of them hated cats, but not all of them did, some had multiple cats in the same house. :| :P

Anyway, we could debate this for years. All that said, I do understand the dog person disliking a cat person, and vise-versa but my only issue was with "Animal lovers" reacting badly to cat person, dog person, or horse person and those Sims reacting badly to an animal lover.
