HomeOpener question

Post by admiralamott » February 10th, 2024, 9:21 am

Hi all,
Sorry, I seem to be the only one posting MC questions these days lol, I hope I'm not a bother

I read on the forum somewhere today that HomeOpener forces open all residents lots (knew this) and makes them all animate etc... is this true? So if I'm playing on my home lot and I have like 12 other inactive households in the world, they're all animated and doing stuff off screen? I have 24 households, wouldn't that be a big drain on resources?

Yes, that's what it means, and yes, it would be a big drain on resources. That's why the recommendation is to only use HomeOpener in worlds with very low populations.

If you want, you can selectively open other houses instead, using MC's Open command on the house's map tag or by clicking on the house itself. Be sure to Close when you're done. Even this will increase resource use, so use it sparingly. I've often noticed performance dropping off a bit and belatedly realized I forgot to close a household after I was finished with whatever I'd been doing there, and in fact it's the first thing I check when a play session has felt sluggish for some time, long enough that it's probably not just due to a temporarily stuck sim.

Holy crap, this should be stated more obviously on the mod's page, I think it would help people as dumb as me. I've had homeopener since I first got MC and I've sorta kept it in there because teenage me 8 years ago used it as it sounded cool. But wow, I've removed it/closed all the houses and ultra speed actually goes fast now lol, it's a pretty significant improvement. I just never thought about it. Thanks for the info!! :)
