Crash to desktop during save

Post by KevinL5275 » August 28th, 2023, 9:48 pm

This problem has returned. I cannot save without the game crashing to desktop with an out of memory error.

I removed Smooth Patch 2.0 and went back to the 1.x version. Drag and Drop to this window doesn't work for me, so the files are on my Google drive.
Anything you can see in these recent files:

Script Error: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1a_tyET ... sp=sharing

Exception: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1z4U-MZ ... sp=sharing

MiniDump: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ul11Bm ... sp=sharing

I'm still getting the 4095mb virtual memory limit, which is why its crashing, but why am I hitting that limit? The most recent save is a custom world, Sunset Valley 2020. I was able to get several sim days of playing and 9 separate saves before this started. My mods folder is around 1 GB. The save file was around 90MB and I used Save Cleaner to get it down to 72MB but no change.

The error trap one is just a routine correction log, I think, and the xcpt is pretty typical for a memory crash.

Size of the save itself is unrelated, but purely the amount of RAM the game is using at the time. You can get an idea of it's doing in that regard by taking a look in Task Manager when the game is running.
What exactly it is committing to memory varies from person to person.

I imagine SV 2020 can be quite intensive on its own, just from the nature of having more detailed lots and many more sims.
+ what exactly comprises your mods folder will make a difference also. 1GB of HD textures and high poly hairs that are actively in the world/on sims would have a significantly different impact on the game than, say, 1GB of items for Build/Buy mode that you haven't gotten around to using.
The resources being rendered at any one time are what get loaded into (and never flushed from) memory, not the literal file size.

I know its well under 3 GB of memory usage, but something makes it spike up to over 3.7 GB for whatever reason.

Yes I do have a lot of hairs and skins, one default and the others are non-default. Does the game load all of the CC at once or just what is being used?

I turned down my residents from 150 to 100, and limited cats, dogs, horses, and paparazzi, too.

Just what is in use, but every instance of it at that.
I'd check things like HD default replacements, and any high-poly hair/clothes that you might have seen townies wearing.

Broken/bad CC can cause crashes as well, but I don't remember if that ever presents itself as a memory limit crash. It can creep up on you though, if the troublesome piece(s) were rolled on inactives or if they're in a certain section of build/buy you don't open until later.

If your CC is separated in a subfolder that's convenient for you to temporarily remove while leaving standard mods behind, it may be worth removing just that and testing how the save behaves.
There will be a missing object warning of course, and maybe some bald sims, but if you just let the game run for a while and pan around the town you'll be able to get an idea if the memory spike is still occurring and if it lets you Save As. The game is a little more forgiving with uninstalled CC than mods that had scripts running and such.

I ran a package check thru S3 Dashboard and did not see anything unusual. I removed my skins and started a new game in another custom world, Storybrook County: https://www.mysimrealty.com/WORLDS_Stor ... ounty.html

It *is* a large world but I have not had issues with it before. However, I didn't even get thru two days before the game crashed out due to out of memory. I didn't even get to try to save this time. I am going to try one more time with a vanilla EA world and if not, then I am just going to delete and reinstall now, and be more careful with the CC that I download. I already got the "hooker boots" once and dealt with removing those. I just prefer custom worlds because they include all expansions.

Well this is interesting. I switched to windowed mode so I could watch Task Manager as it saved. It was around 2.1-2.3GB the whole time and saved just fine. So I went back to full-screen mode and played another hour, then tried to save. It crashed. I didn't try again yet in windowed mode.

Well generally speak, if you like to play "large worlds" you will encounter these problems far more often, because the PC means CPU, RAM AND Graphiccard have a lot to do. Especially with lots of sims and also over-stuffed houses (especially for inactives).

There is nothing you can do about it, well of course checking all your CC little by litte and mods too, but mainly the size of the world and that which has been mentioned is the problem for all of us, because of the RAM limitation.
But it is also relevant how much RAM your grafic card has, like 4 GB is good, but more is better :)

Is it possible that your frame rates are no longer being capped when in full-screen mode? What do you see when you use the fps on cheat code in-game, as you play and move the game camera around?

Regardless though, many of us can no longer function properly in true full-screen mode due to changes having been made by way of Win 10/11 updates, and have leaned to stay in windowed mode. Windowed Borderless makes it feel just like full-screen in many ways, so that might be something worth trying if you don't already use it.

Its a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 with 2gb video memory. I have the resolution set at 1920 x 1080, which is the native resolution of my monitor. Could that be a problem?

Yes my FPS is definitely capped at 60 with NVIDIA's tools. Interesting info about the Windows changes to full-screen mode.

I suggest that you cap FPS to 30 (29),
2 GB Nvidia RAM is very little for Sims 3.
