It gets kind of frustrating having to edit them in CAS all over again, especially when you don't necessarily perfectly remember their outfits

I don't remember, but I have a lot genies in town, who don't change into default genies look and outfit, also inherited ones first, or secondary (I use hybrid).

You can also try, save the sim in CAS, before you give occult, to the savedsims folder, and after giving the occult, if the look still resets:
go into CAS and exchange the look with your saved sim.

This only changes the look and clothing.
