Save file deleted itself

Post by WoolySmurf » February 4th, 2023, 11:34 am

My latest game crashed earlier today while saving. No error 12 or anything like that, which I rarely if ever get anyway these days. Have no logs to show because nothing was generated. Since I save once every sim day I didn't care all that much until I restarted the game and the whole save was gone! Wiped from the save file too. Now, I have an older save to go back to, so I'll live I guess. But I'm still floored about the whole thing, because after playing TS3 since even before release this is something that has never, ever happened to me before. Crashing yes, but save file being deleted like that, NO!

Gonna have to get better at keeping more backups. I usually have about 5-10 of them for challenge saves and such, but this was a more sandboxy type of save so I wasn't as diligent and the one backupI have is quite old.

I'm wondering if anyone knows why this happens in the first place and/or have had this happen in your games too?

  1. you say your game crashed, but befor it happend, you surely have saved?
Look into the CurrentGame.sims3 folder under Documents The sims 3, are there any file? If yes delete them always when your game have crashed and there are still leftovers
  2. save files cannot be wiped out by the game or windows -> if it was successfully written, maybe this was not the case?
  3. how many save files are in your saves folder? if there are a many like over 80 or more, it can be that saves are not be displayed, there is limit
  4. do you see the save file in your save folder - the one you are missing now, or is there a save with a bad at the end?
  5. to save "only"once every sim day is very risky, I recommend to save far more often inbetween a sim day, to have less time and especially actions to loose. You can use nraas Saver which prompts you every 30 minutes to save (real time, you can adjust this in the settings) and also in build mode which is not possible normally

Save file deleted itself

Were you using Save or Save As? If you're using Save and overwriting them, you should stop that. It may have died when it was overwriting the file and thus poof to your file.

Save file deleted itself

@C-Dark
Thank you for your thorough reply. I've no issues with the things you mentioned though. I don't have a need for the remind function of Saver since once a sim day is more than enough for me. It's a choice. ;) More than that and it'd get annoying. I'm fine with replaying a sim day. Have just been a bit lax with keeping backups lately, usually I'm all good.

Game crashed while saving and the file is gone, I didn't explain it in detail, but there being nothing in the saves folder is what I meant. I was just curious about how it happened, since like you mentioned there usually is a .bad save file in the folder when something goes wrong with saving and now there wasn't, which I've never experienced before, in all these years.

Thanks for your reply, Chain. I usually do a numbered 'save as' but perhaps I didn't change the name this time as I usually do so I guess in effect that would be the same as a plain 'save' in this instance. Don't think I accidentally hit 'save' as I never use it unless it's the very first time for a world.

Yeah this can happen to all of us, sad that it just happend whenyour game crashed :)

(but mostly not if using Saver, it adds the next number automatically at the end too. It is a good reminder to save as, but of course you can skip it too, you can also set the time much higher/lower, and I most like the possibility to be able to save when in build mode, like when creating or editing a lot, which can take a while, to not have to exit build mode for saving anymore)

Well, I've accepted I got Murphy's Law'd this time. That's what I get for being lazy with the backups for once. :D

Yeah, Saver is a great mod overall, definitely agree.. I personally only have it for the Pause On Load function though I must admit  Had problems before with the game running at start even though I always saved while paused when last played. The other functions I've tried but didn't really suit me so I always change the settings to never prompt me. That's the beauty of all the NRaas mods: the ability to customize the game so much with all the settings.
