Installing Nraas on external hard drive

Post by silntwaves » December 10th, 2022, 2:03 am

Hey all, big fan of Sims and have been playing since Sims 1 Makin' Magic! Never thought I, of all people, would have to ask a question but here ya go. We're never too old to learn! Thanks for any help anyone can bring.

So I know it's not recommended to play on an external hard drive, but gaming computers are expensive, and I don't have the grand to drop right now. I needed the extra storage, and $30 is a bargain for 500 GB of space. I have played Sims 3 on an external hard drive in the past (about a year or two ago) with mods and cc, and things were fine.

The problem is that on Sims 3, none of the Nraas mods are not showing up. CC is working fine. Here are the current locations of things:

CC: Drive > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Downloads

Nraas: Drive > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Mods > Packages

Some notes
  • In the Sims 3 folder, there are no .cache files to delete
  • sims3pack folder is in The Sims 3 folder
  • Resource.cfg file is in the Mods folder
  • I tried moving my Nraas .package files to the downloads folder (read that in one of these threads), but it didn't work. Now they are back in the Packages folder
Any ideas/ Did I install something wrong? I wanna get this handled before that EA app thing rears its ugly head, and I can't get back in. Thanks!

Installing Nraas on external hard drive

Hi there, I don't think we're getting the full picture here, because what you have described couldn't possibly work even if the new drive were internal. Let's take a step back if we could.

There are two parts to the game's installation and setup that can be managed independently of each other, the program file installation and the TS3 user game folder, but they do need to work together. Your game (and its EPs and SPs) are installed on which drive? By default, that would be C:\Program Files (x86) (assuming C is your system drive and we are talking Windows here rather than a Mac), but the install can be directed to a location on a different drive if space is tight.

The user game folder must be in Documents. Or reachable from Documents. Again by default Documents would be on the C (system) drive but the entire Documents library can be redirected to a different drive by using settings in Windows. Or, alternatively, symlinks can be used to redirect a portion of Documents, let's say the EA\The Sims 3 folder, to a different drive but that's a bit fussy to set up.

But you can't just put the contents of what would be the user game folder in Documents someplace else and expect the game to know that it's meant to read and write to that location. There being no cache files spawning suggests to me that the game isn't actually using that user game folder, the one you added mods to, but another one located somewhere else such as back on the system drive. Where do your saved games actually show up?

So where have you actually got these things installed and how have you tried to manage the redirection of the user game folder? And how large, I mean small, is your system drive? External drive installs and user game folders are very problematic to game performance because of the latency caused by the game constantly reading from and writing to a slower external connection.

Finally, putting Package based content, such as mods, into Downloads will never work. The Downloads folder within the user game folder is for the Launcher to read from on startup and the Launcher only works with sims3pack content. Package files there will be ignored or could potentially confuse the Launcher since they would not be expected. Could you show us where on this site that it says otherwise?

The name of my external drive is Volume D. From there, it's documents, sims 3...

The external drive is 500G, and the computer only has about 27 Gigs, so if possible, I'd like to keep things on the drive. The expansion packs are installed on the external drive, but I have noticed an error because whatever is put onto the external drive has been duplicated to the computer (This PC > Documents > Electronic Arts > Sims 3. So probably an error somewhere in the installation.

But I am noticing the game is smooth and running fine. The only problem is getting the Nraas installed.

Saved games are located on the computer (and not the external drive) in the Sims 3 folder.

So it seems like I need to uninstall and reinstall? Could you possibly pinpoint what step in the installation where I made the error as far as Nraas? And I guess overall, since my saves are still going directly to the computer.

And as far as the advice to move the .package files to downloads, it was a random forum from 2009. Couldn't find any advice, and it was a last resort before making this account and posting my question here.

Looks like the best fix would be to get another computer then. Are there any that can run the sims 3 and have lots of storage for under 1k USD?

Again, how large is the C drive that now only has 27 GB of free space?

Your user game folder on D is being ignored. The game is going to look for and use a TS3 user game folder in Documents and it will create one there if it doesn't find one. Not a folder named Documents, I mean the actual Documents library that is defined by Windows for the logged in user. That's just what it is going to do. To redirect the user game folder to D, you would either need to redirect your entire Documents folder to D or else deploy a symbolic link from within C to within D that would allow the game to jump to D for the purposes of TS3. Sorry, I know this isn't being understood but perhaps someone else here can explain it more clearly.

And again, for an external drive, this is not advised.

It should not be overly difficult to find a desktop perfectly capable of handling all of TS3 for less than to around $600 USD. Laptops will run higher. Much less than that and we would be talking about cutting corners on specs and game performance. The game is over 13 years old now and does not require a modern gaming system by 2022 standards. Unfortunately I was born without the savvy shopper gene, so hopefully others here who have that might suggest some specific systems to look at if needed.

So what's the reason that Nraas isn't working but CC is? Is the only fix for this to move the folders, and if that doesn't work re-install the game?

The laptop I'm using is cheap and old which is why it only has 27 gigs.

If you installed the custom content through the launcher, the associated files would automatically be installed into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3. If you're saying your .package-based custom content is showing up, then there are duplicate copies in the Documents folder.

As for a new computer, do you want the best option available for under $1,000, or the cheapest good option? For example, this one is on sale for a few more hours for $650:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-omen-25 ... Id=6504333

It's overpowered for Sims 3 but is also as cheap as any good option I'm seeing right now. (Not to mention, it's a very good price for any gaming desktop and an excellent one for such good hardware.) If you don't like it, or if you don't see this reply until the sale ends, let me know whether you prefer cheaper or more powerful as well as any other details that matter to you.
