I'm playing the Showtime EP for the first time in several years, and after I'd already started a new singer, I realized that I hadn't made any sims to serve as proprietors. So I saved the game, made a Proprietor family, and moved them into a house. I couldn't find a way to assign them as proprietors, though, so I used Master Controller to change the settings such that wishes and promises would be saved, then saved my Singer family.
After saving, I used Edit Town to switch to the Proprietors family to have them buy the various properties. When I switched back, my singer had lost all of the wishes that were saved in her four promise slots.
Why didn't it work?

When you set MasterController to retain wishes, you then need to use MasterController to switch households, or that setting won't be honored. In live mode, you can click on a house and select NRaas > MC > Make Active, or click on the individual sim and select the same. Or you can click on City Hall and select NRaas > MC > Sim > Make Active, X out the filters, and choose a sim from the list.
When MC is set to retain wishes, the Make Active command will say (Dream Catcher).
Other mods follow this logic too, for example if you've set certain households to retain wishes with StoryProgression, you need to use the SP command to make a different sim active, or else the dreams won't be retained.
If you want to continue to use Edit Town to switch households, you'll need to install Mover and set Retain Dreams and Opportunities to True within Mover's settings.

While the Dreamer mod, good to have for other reasons, is not required for these Dream Catching switches, there is an FAQ here that discusses more fully how Dream Catching switches work and when they do not.

Oh, thank you so much!
The Nraas suite of mods does so MANY things that I'm not familiar with them all; I didn't realize you COULD use the mod to switch households.
Sorry for being a dumb user!

I don't think you're being a dumb user by any definition, and sites like this wouldn't have forums if the people running them didn't want to answer questions. We all need to start somewhere with these mods... or maybe I should say most of us do, with the exception of those that coded them and the occasional uncannily gifted platypus.
