Ryzen 5600X
Hello you lovely people! After finding out that Alder Lake is not working nicely with the Sims 3 and especially not with the CAW tool, I decided to get a different processor. But before I buy anything I'd like to ask: is AMD Ryzen 5600X a good alternative?

The 5600X is a great processor for Sims 3. I doubt you'd see any benefit from a higher-tier Ryzen CPU unless you ran some benchmarks or took out a stopwatch. And there are no comparable issues with the current Ryzen generation as there are with Alder Lake, although the Alder Lake issue does have a workaround that seems to be doing the job for most people.

Thank you for the feedback, that's so good to hear! I know about that workaround, it works ok for Sims 3 but it doesn't work satisfyingly with the World tool. And that's my most favorite part of the game, so I decided to roll back. I lost hope EA will bother with a fix.

I have a Ryzen 3700X that performs about the same as the 5600X, and I've been thinking about getting a 5900X because it's faster at decompression, but I'm not sure exactly how much that would speed up loading of sims 3 saves. But the loading times halved when I went from my older AMD Phenom II 1100T to the 3700X (and using the same speed SSD). That made me really happy.puzzlezaddict wrote: ↑March 5th, 2022, 11:06 amThe 5600X is a great processor for Sims 3. I think the question is how much faster the 5900X at decompression on a single thread. Most benchmarks I see are multi-threaded, which gives a large advantage to a 12-core CPU over one with 8 cores. I'm sure the 5900X is faster on a single thread too, just probably not as much. And if you're only looking at decreasing loading times by a few seconds, I don't know that it would be worth spending the extra money, not to mention probably rebuilding your PC unless you happen to have one of the relatively few motherboards that supports both 3rd- and 5th-gen Ryzen.Cororon wrote: ↑March 8th, 2022, 9:24 pmI have a Ryzen 3700X that performs about the same as the 5600X, and I've been thinking about getting a 5900X because it's faster at decompression, but I'm not sure exactly how much that would speed up loading of sims 3 saves. Besides, the next new shiny thing is months away, and it'll be better still, because it always is.

I have a X570 motherboard, so it would work fine with the 5900X after a BIOS update. The loading times went from 12-13 minutes to 5-6 minutes for large worlds when I upgraded to the 3700X. Maybe it's not worth $/€ 500 to shave off another minute, but hey it's tempting! The next generation will need a new motherboard, and I feel it's too early for me to do a major upgrade like that. Especially since sims 3 is the only game I play.puzzlezaddict wrote: ↑March 9th, 2022, 10:50 amI think the question is how much faster the 5900X at decompression on a single thread. I've been using a 5900x since May of last year both Sims 3 and CAW work great. I wouldn't recommend a 5900x if you only play the sims, that is a workstation class CPU and the sims 3 only uses about 4 threads. You also really need to use the smooth patch with these modern CPUs.
