The Lag of My Life

Post by AYHJA » June 4th, 2021, 10:28 am

Waking up and coming to this thread was like Christmas. :) It's like I've found my people.

@Igazor - As an IT guy, I KNOW better about the differences between x86 and x64 applications. But I've seen that "fix" on so many other places I just figured this might be an exception to the rule, lol. Glad to know I'm not crazy. I'll change that .ini file back to the default, which I think was 2? And thanks for the clarification, I'm not even sure I really need SP to be honest. I really don't care about the other sims in my town, they're just there for the show. :D I'm going to put all my other mods back in and see if for sure it's SP that's causing the issue.

I have checked my FPS. I took out the hard 30 fps cap and put back the Vsync. When I tested it in game it was mostly 59 and 60. Never went above it.

@Zero - If I had cheated, I probably would have already moved on to Sims 4 completely and saved myself the headache. By the time you do all the things necessary to make your Sim immortal to complete those quests, my God. I cringe to think of the hours I've spent in this game. I took every challenge literally and completed every one. Never did the money cheat or anything. Just grinding.

And yeah, having 32GB is the new thing to do post-Covid. :D I got the good stuff too. Probably added another year or 2 to the life of my desktop.

I think SP is my problem. I removed all my nrass mods and ran the game. Then moved every mod back in except SP and the ones related to it.

Image

I even gussied up my FPS back to 60. All good.

Saving still took 4-5 mins. And quitting took a long time still. So no real changes when I removed nrass except during gameplay.

Going to do some more testing and be sure. You guys are great, thank you so much.

The Lag of My Life

By the way, I got up this morning. Rebooted my computer and immediately got to work on my Sims. Which, true to form, went right into throwing a curveball. One of these nrass mods caused my game to CTD within seconds of it starting. SP may not be completely to blame after all.

Image

I'm probably running a child mod without the parent or something. Just thought I'd share that. I'm going to follow the suggestion and try to run more "core" mods that cater more to my play style. I'll work on isolating which of those in the folder above caused the CTD.

You can't have the MC Progression add-on module in play without StoryProgression. That will crash the game on startup every time. The module is meant to be a bridge between MC and SP, it would have nothing to do if both base mods are not present.

The default size of the game's script heap is 20 GB. If you don't feel like counting the zeros and applying the units of measure there, and you are certain you only changed the first digit to an 8 (which would be 80 GB), then yes the first digit should be changed back to a 2.

1 - What is the current resident population of this world? On City Hall or an in-game computer, NRaas > MC > Demographics > Population > "X" to dismiss the filter. The other numbers are sometimes interesting too, but it's really the resident population that is of interest at the moment.

2 - What is the size of this world's nhd file (in MBs), within the game save that you are using in your TS3 user game folder's Saves file in Documents. If the game is actually running, you can also find this file under CurrentGame, but it will be the same size.

3 - Were you running the speed of progression on Normal? Many of us find that more progressed worlds work better and feel more natural when running progression on Slow, although that becomes a matter of personal preference. NRaas > SP > General Options > Adjust Speed (Normal is the default). But this point is moot if you don't really care about SP anymore.

By the way, taking a long time to Quit (not save) is pretty normal. That's an EA server/FeaturedItems update thing. I usually minimize the application and do something else to let it thrash around for a while when this happens.

@Igazor Oh, alright, alright. Thanks for calling me out, Mr. Manager. I never said I was a professional, now did I?

Yeah, guys! Listen to the man, he's an IT guy for cryin' out loud! (No worries! Just a light-hearted joke, so please don't kill me! We're all already dyin' for the post apocalypse after the pandemic, here...)

Oh trust me. I've already cheated the heck out of Sims 4. Now I "drug" my Sims needs with MC Command Centre, the popular equivalent to Nraas' Master Controller. I told you it was serious.

*Shakes head* People are never satisfied with the amount of RAM they really need. Poor, poor Sims 3. Just tryin' to live it's 4 GB RAM life...

But here's how to use most of your RAM...from an amateurs' perspective...

You wanna open up your GraphicRules.sgr file and it begins with...
if ($textureMemory == 0)
seti textureMemory 32
setb textureMemorySizeOK false
endif
...and edit the two middle lines like this:
if ($textureMemory == 0)
seti textureMemory 1024 - (...or for 16GB RAM or higher, 8192.)
# setb textureMemorySizeOK false
endif

And since I was feelin' too ambitious about my RAM upgrade, I set the texture memory to 32000!--(Seriously, though, don't do that. It's too dangerous, but my CPU has been still living since the 5 years I got it. ;)) Hey, what can I say, the more I grew up with the game, the more reckless and tech savvy I got with the configuration files. Can you blame me, though?

lol @ Zero! All that is evidence of is that post pandemic, everything is questioned.! I'm looking at stuff so differently now. Cray.

As soon as I posted it, I proofread the post and saw that file hiding there. I removed it and of course you're right, game started right back up. I kept a copy of my default .ini file in the folder, so I just restored it. Now my game is booting with every module I had except for SP and the ones related to it.

1. Current Resident Population = 71 (51 Households, 68 Service, 20 Homeless, 5 Tourists)
2. 147 MB (I'm playing Lucky Palms and have not travelled in this world yet.)
3. After reading the tweaks, I put SM on it's absolute slowest setting to try to correct whatever issue I was having.

After clearing out my 5 cache files, rebooting and restoring this set of nrass mods:

Image

I loaded up my game and did a reset all, which took about 5 mins and reset 76,746 objects. With the modules loaded above, so far so good. No gameplay issues. Occasional lag, but I can track that because it's not happening every 10 seconds like before. I can transition from place to place easily and queueing tasks is great.

Zero2Hero - Texture memory is VRAM, not RAM. The game is only programmed to be able to work with 800 MB of VRAM. We recommend 1024 for the texture memory override, although I'm not sure I've seen anyone report issues using 2048 if their video card carries that much VRAM to begin with.

AYHJA - This sounds like progress then. You may want to consider running SaveCleaner or running an equivalent cleanup routine on that nhd file. At 147 MB you're fine, but the nhd will expand in size over the course of its life and will need some attention at some point. I never let mine go much above 300 MB. Your world's resident population also sounds fine and well-controlled.

Excuse me! I am a tech savvy! Not really a real career, but I KNOW the difference between a CPU and a GPU!

Wait a minute--

Hey, @AYHJA. The common case of the occasional stutter is how 3D games work. Your 32GB RAM is still a computer. It can't help it. Doesn't it feel better suffering with a CPU than not? (Bad advice, bad advice. Don't follow that...)

The Lag of My Life

LOL @ Zero!

Not to be lazy, but I'm a little traumatized from this experience. Is the Save Cleaner you recommend v2.2 by Kuree..? I just want to make sure I get the right things to keep my game going. If I put it down again and pick it up in a few years, I don't want to start this process all over again. Since my last start, no Error Code 12s, saving every 30 mins. I wonder if my having Awesomemod before i got nrass has something to do with why my SP is f0xx0red.

I am, however, a little miffed I seemingly can't run SP. I do intend to add it back piece by piece to see if I can nail down what the cause might be, but it seems to me I'm just going to have to let it go. My Sims 3 "fish tank" (I like to watch it while I work) is back up and running smoothly. I'm probably not going to mess with it, but I might if you guys think it might be beneficial for others for me to figure out what's what with why it won't run on my system.

Other than that, I'd consider my issue solved.

Save Cleaner is indeed by Kuree, but v2.x won't work on a Patch 1.67 Steam install (this is what you have, correct?). You require version 1. Nothing horrible would happen with v2, it just won't recognize where the game is installed and it will error out.

And again, if and when you are ready to retry SP you might want to try progression on one of the lower speeds. Not the speed of the game clock, I mean the speed of SP's progression as described earlier.
