New laptop

Post by Mandelyn » May 12th, 2021, 12:10 am

My son sent me money to buy a laptop (Mother's Day/Birthday present) since he will miss my birthday while he is out to sea. Would this be a good one?

MSI GF75 Thin Gaming Laptop - 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10300H - GeForce GTX 1650Ti - 144Hz 1080p Display
There is a good price at Costco and I would be getting a 1tb SSD external and probably upgrade the Ram in the near future. I do own the entire Sims3 game, including the store, will be using NRass mods and I do like CC but I can cut back on it some if needed (it will be really really hard to though).

That's a reasonably good laptop for its price, usually around $800 U.S., so if you'd pay less than that, you'd be getting a good deal. The graphics card should be able to run Sims 3 on ultra settings, minus the two (water and high-detail lots) that should be turned down to lower the stress on the game engine. The processor and RAM are fine, and for storage, you could get away with a 256 GB drive if you were careful.

This model does tend to run a bit hot and doesn't quite get the full potential out of its hardware, but that's typical for laptops in this price range, and anyway the 1650 ti gives you enough of a margin that it shouldn't matter too much. The only major issue is that it does get noisy under load, but you probably won't care if you play with headphones on.

You'll definitely need to take steps to manually limit the in-game framerates, perhaps to 72 (half the screen's refresh rate) if you want to keep temperatures down and/or can't tell the difference between that and higher fps. This would be necessary on any computer capable of ultra settings.

If you'd like other suggestions, let me know your budget and country, and I'll have a look.

I am in the US and it would be no more than $1000.
I would definitely cap the framerates and to be safe I will be getting a cooling base thingy.

I'm guessing I found the MSI at Costco, and although I can't see the price, since I'm not a member, it looks to be $850. You could certainly do better on the price for that hardware, for example this Dell is $750 on a couple different sites:

ht tps: // www .amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-G3-3500-i5-10300H/dp/B08DX82SD8

I wouldn't say it's any better than the MSI, but for $100 less, it's worth considering.

But for $900, you could get a 1660 ti, which would give you a much larger margin to absorb the inevitable fps drops, or high poly cc for that matter. This Lenovo line is highly rated and has excellent cooling for its class:

This one is an alternative, also highly rated (although perhaps not quite as highly). Its processor is weaker than the Lenovo's but is still more than good enough, and as a bonus, the CPU doesn't run as hot overall. I don't think this is a problem in either direction; I'm just mentioning it in case it matters to you.

In case you really like the design of the MSI, this one is $930 and has a 1660 ti:

I left out laptops with a 1650 ti that were in the $850 range, since you can get a 1660 ti for just a bit more, as well as slightly cheaper models that aren't rated as highly. But if you'd like to see more options, just ask.

P.S. I had to break up a couple of links because this site would only let me include three of them in one post (saying the max was 4), so just delete the spaces.

What a great kid you have! :)

The rest of it, I'm no help. I literally bought the first gaming laptop I saw that had people in the reviews saying "Sims 3 runs great on this!" I was like, "welp, that's the one".
