How to get opportunities
Ages ago I became fed up with the never ending phone calls about opportunities, and somehow I managed to turn them off. I have just started playing a handy sim, and would like her to get opportunities to fix things around the town. I remember I used to get similar, but I have completely forgotten how I turned them off, and so have no idea how to turn them back on again. Can anyone help me please.

I'm sorry to be so vague, but if memory serves me correctly, it is in the game settings, which regulates the freedom of will and the duration of life of the characters.

As an alternative to opportunities, is this sim in the formal self-employed custom handy sim career provided by the NRaas Careers mod? If so she can get customers by using an interaction on a computer, the game camera will focus on their next assignment. Or she can just go around upgrading and repairing stuff. If they do this on municipal lots, the town will pay them. For privately owned lots, the owners will pay if they can afford to.
Or are they not in that career, they just happen to have skills in this area and wish to do some repair jobs on the side?

thanks both of you. I had forgotten that the opportunities could be suppressed in the options section. I had mine suppressed.
But I prefer the idea that igazor mentioned, as I don't really want all my sims to get opportunities. How do I go about getting my sim into the self employed handy sim career? thanks

Hi Sheridan, to get the handyman career, click on city hall and choose to register as self-employed, and a list of options will come up. One will be Handyman. Your sim needs some skills in Handiness to be able to register.

And one of us should have mentioned that the Careers mod Self-Employed add-on module is required.

Aha! that was what I was missing. and just what I want. thanks guys so much. I will install it now and my sim can get to work.
I was buying new toilets, etc, and upgrading them and selling them at consignment. She got a bit of profit, but this will be great.

Boy, you wouldn't want to be doing this for the money! My sim can only do about 2 jobs per day - one before all the rest of the town goes to work, and one when they come home. Maybe I will have to retire all my elders so that they stay at home.
I have tried to get her to upgrade things on community lots (like the toilets and showers), but have not had the options yet. Maybe when her skill is higher, she can upgrade the nectar machine at the nectary.
In the meantime, during the day, she is still upgrading things at home and selling them on consignment. not very profitable. luckily she is not the main breadwinner in the family.

Does your town library have a lot of computers in it? My sim did very well repairing and updating those for the town in between viable customer assignments once he had gained sufficient skills, but the library in question has like 16 of them all over the place.
Also note that you don't have to use the computer generated assignments all of the time. If you use Tagger you should be able to see who is home at any given time, ring the bell, chat up whoever lives there, ask to come inside, and then start upgrading stuff for them. The Inappropriate But in a Good Way LTR might be needed here so you aren't tossed out for being such a rude houseguest or whatever.
