Installer issues

Post by mrsgrohl » June 8th, 2019, 12:34 pm

I did try to put the library files into my new game folder, but it didn't work. I was therefore quite willing to just have them go into CAS and have to re-do all their skills etc, but it's a moot point now as I've trashed any other files I should have saved by the sound of it. AND now the original problem has returned.

So. Last night I spent forever re-creating my Sim in CAS, and I've improved it, so that's good. Now I DON'T want to lose him again. Getting him to look right is so difficult. Last night everything worked fine after only installing a half a dozen or so of my collected items from The Store. This morning I thought I'd go ahead and install the rest and I'm being told I need the latest version of the game. Which I have.

I feel like I'm going round in circles. Thank you for your patience.

The Latest Version error is sometimes a malfunction.

Are you on Patch 1.67 or 1.69? Both are (should be) considered current. If on 1.69, try a Repair Game by way of Origin. If on 1.67, you might either need the Store Patches, which I can point you to since the Launcher no longer provides those automatically as it once did, or perhaps running EA's SuperPatcher might help.

Yes, it's 1.69. Everything is via Origin. I did try a patch the other week but it made things worse instead of better, and then your new game folder fix worked......

Let me see if I can find this Origin Repair Game.

You cannot apply a game patch, if this is what you meant, to a 1.69 game install without breaking it. Origin is designed to handle the patching on its own. If Repair Game doesn't help (it's a function within Origin itself), I am afraid to say you might now have a damaged installation.

OK, that makes sense actually. So what files would I need to save to keep the Sim I've made safe for after I fix it somehow?

Getting into some unknown (to me) territory here as I haven't had an Origin install in a couple of years now, having gotten too annoyed at the entire setup and switched over to Steam/1.67. I would think that saved game and/or library files of a household with your sim in it, either or both backed up outside of the user game folder, should be fine to restore a sim at any later time. Again, SavedSims are good too but those are just CAS templates when they work properly.

How did the Repair Game routine go? If your install is damaged, the game would need to be uninstalled, registry cleaned (such as with Piriform's CCleaner), and reinstalled. The user game folder in Documents would not be expected to survive such a reinstall and still work correctly.

Not entirely true. Unless the game folder is already corrupted simply removing it from Documents and placing it on the desktop (or zipping up the game folder and putting it on an external HDD) will keep it safe.

Also as a side note with patch 1.69 having the Store Content Patch in with the games Delta Build packages in the games install directory. Some Store Items will not display the Store Icon that got me confused one time when I installed Steam Punk the Return I thought they didn't install until I noticed I think it was the Anachronism VCT laptop without the Store Icon next to it.

The OP is already having problems with their user game folder and has rebuilt it at least once. But anyway, what I meant was if a working game folder were to be left in place in Documents, it will not necessarily survive a reinstall and still be functional.

I'm currently in conversation with Origin to try to get to the bottom of this. We were disconnected yesterday, and then I had to go out. I'm going to get back to them this morning. I looked at the library files, despite letting the game run a little this morning then hitting save no more new library files were created, I have 16 library files. The only sims he has come into contact with were the university mascot and the repo man (that'll teach me to let the game run without paying attention) so I don't know which one is the key file, I guess I should save all of them? Then the Saved Sim package obviously, if all else fails. And the games too, I guess.

I'll put these in a safe spot. I have nothing else precious. In fact only the Saved Sim matters. Then we'll see what Origin propose.

Sorry, I think there is still some sort of disconnect here?

Library files are not created automatically. If you save a sim household or a community lot down to the bin while in Edit Town, that creates a new file. Each file represents one such entry in the household and community lot bins, that's all they do. They can also hold manually exported mod settings, but that's a different kind of bin entry. None of these have anything to do with routine gameplay or sims/lots that are already in an ongoing game, they are for manual placement of households and lots while again in Edit Town.

SavedSims are merely CAS templates. They only show up, when they are working correctly, within CAS. Like the bin entries, they have nothing to do with sims who are already in an ongoing game save. Sorry if you already know all of this, but I'm still having trouble understanding what you mean by these kinds of files not showing up in your game.
