Teens adopting???

Post by JohnL83 » May 13th, 2019, 8:41 pm

Okay, not sure what is going on here, but I do not have my game set to allow teens to have kids. (at least I don't think so)

Anyway, I've never had a teen get pregnant yet, but today I was checking out my town and found that one of my teens had an adopted kid. I did verify that there was no mother listed under family tree and I'm guessing that SP provided the toddler. Is there something I may have missed that I need to alter so this doesn't happen again? I did a TA on the kid, because if that wasn't odd enough, I should not be getting sims added to this town anyway! My max population is set at 140 and the town has 153 residents. I also have been mindful of the points each cycle and none of them add up to what I have it set. Also, I don't see why the game gave this dude a kid when I have several couples around town who are the perfect age to have kids either adopted or otherwise and several couples are even childless! I even have two sims in town who are pregnant and my active sim actually went into labor right after I made this toddler vanish. This child was also placed in a house with no crib and no extra bed either. How exactly is immigration supposed to work?

Teens adopting???

Wait a minute, there does seem to be an issue here but let's approach it from the correct angle.

If you do not wish to have teens adopt, the SP setting is Pregnancy: Allow Adoption > T/F under Town/Household/Caste/Sim Options. It should thus be set to False on the Teen caste. Note that this will prevent teens from adopting pets as well, but that would only be significant if you have households headed by teens and no one older since the YAs and older could still adopt the pets on behalf of the household.

Whether sims adopt or not has nothing to do with existing pregnancies and when they come to term. Nor does the town population cap have anything to do with labor/births, that one gates whether sims can become pregnant without player direction, not whether they are then allowed to give birth -- although it may have a say as to whether multiple births meaning twins or higher can happen. Once a sim becomes pregnant, the town's total resident population has already increased by 1. Whether sims adopt or can have kids has nothing to do with the furniture they may have at home either, that factor only comes into play when sims move into a new (to them) house or immigrate into town by moving into a new house. Either the household that is suddenly failing housing inspection for lack of cribs will have to move, if they can, to a lot that better meets their needs or the player has to step in and go furniture shopping for them. Having babies is a matter of biology, and biology does not care about the inventory of available sleeping slots a home may have or be lacking.

In other words, adoption is a form of having babies (sort of), not a form of immigration.

In the event you are seeing players say that families who lack surplus beds and cribs cannot adopt or have kids, the players are probably using AwesomeMod as I believe that one does place such restrictions on adoptions and pregnancies forming.

The real issue here is how the sim, no matter what age they are, was allowed to adopt when the town was already beyond its SP set population cap. I think something is slightly off with the inactive adoption scenarios when they are allowed to run, occasionally I see new kids (though not every day and not all that many) suddenly show up in households where they were clearly adopted because there is no other explanation for where they may have come from, and with no notifications given to the player no matter how chatty SP is otherwise. Something about that scenario seems to be capable of occasionally sneaking under the radar of the population cap gating mechanism. That sort of thing is really difficult to produce on demand, it just sort of happens by accident so it seems in my game. But I have never seen a sim adopt pets or kids when they have been forbidden to do so explicitly.

Just a thought - whenever one of my sims has adopted a child/baby/toddler, the sim who made the call is listed as the parent of the adoptee in the family tree. So if there was no mother listed under the family tree, was the teen who adopted the toddler a male? and so therefore the toddler's father?

Yes, sorry I didn't clarify that. He lived with his elder parents who'd just aged up to elders. He doesn't have long to age up either. My teens are set at 150 days and he's on like 135. Elders are 200.

Anyway, I think it's like Igazor said. I checked all my settings again and while I don't have a caste set for teens not to adopt, they are not allowed to live alone or even have jobs in my towns. The job thing is just so they have more time to interact with each other in the game, there's so little time after school and we all know how hard it can be to get townies to stick around, so sometimes weekends are just not enough! IRL I think teens should have part time jobs to get them ready for the real world and learn some responsibility. I suppose it was just a fluke thing. I really do not see this happening often, in fact as far as I am aware no other teen has ever had a kid by adoption in any of the 6 games I have running.

Igazor - I'm not sure what the deal was, but thank you for the run-down on how SP works. I don't use the Awesome mod, most of mine are all Nraas and I run nearly all of the SP mods save a few of them. I don't have Supernatural so I have no need for those.I have 3 pregnancies in town and I just lost another 3 elders so that will match up just fine. As I stated in my post above this was a unique occurrence so I'm assuming it was just a hiccup in the game. I will keep an eye on things and see what happens.

BTW: This is my new SV town, the one I created to porter my original and first sim families from the old SV which had gotten so very glitchy. I got the big "main" mods imported into the game. There are a couple of the mods that I did not have exported so some things had to be set all over again, I doubt they had anything to do with this problem though. It was things like Tempest and Saver and one or two of the smaller mods I didn't bother exporting because I didn't do much to change them. I still can't figure out Tempest, it just is there for looks. I just gave up on Tempest and turned off weather at EA level, except snow and fog. I just can't figure out how to keep it from raining so gosh darn often! My sim year is 50 days with summer being the longest and it seemed to rain almost every other day in the summer. But as usual...I digress...

thanks
