Create-a-Style saved patterns disappear after quitting the game

Post by pepsilover » April 20th, 2024, 7:14 am

I've encountered an issue where all of my Create-a-Style saved patterns and object swatches will disappear from the game after quitting. They seem to save fine and I can use them as much as I'd like until I quit the game and relaunch it, which causes them to cease existence all at once. Letting the game generate a new userpresets.package file doesn't fix this, and so doesn't generating a whole new Documents folder. Not even repairing the game through the EA app helps me here. I've checked many times, and no - userpresets.package is not set to be read-only. Opening it in S3PE usually just shows that it's completely empty despite being around 8 kilobytes at times. One time opening the file showed that there were only three resources with an "unknown" tag in there, so I don't know what's going on here.

Hopefully I won't have to do too much digging into my mods until I find the answer!
I figured it out. The culprit is "Move Objects Cheat with hotkey" by Eca on MTS. It's also the mod that caused the crashing during game exit. Looking at the comments on the mod's page shows that other people have also encountered the same problems as me while having it in their game. The mod creator seems to be aware of the issues, and they tried to fix the crashing issue, but they haven't been able to, it seems... So they're yet to do so. I guess I'll just have to remove it. At least there's no more crashing while quitting and my presets will save now! I think I should start reading the comments on a mod's page before downloading it...

Are these objects you're trying to save the pattern with regular game objects, Sims 3 Store objects or are they from another mod?

They're regular game objects, as I don't have any object CC. I do have some Store objects, but I tend not to use those.

Well if it's furniture you have to find the exact piece that was used. If it's wall paneling or something similar that could be very hard to find depending on how much you have installed you would probably want to use the filters to find those.
Not sure why there not saving for you or they are and there just hard to find, had that happen more times than I can count.

I've been saving a bunch of object swatches and patterns and none of them show up after launching the game again! There's something wrong for sure. Patterns not saving definitely hurts the most, as I tend to reuse them a lot... The userpresets.package file does seem to be growing in size despite the patterns not showing up. It still shows as empty in S3PE, though.

I'm assuming it's still happening even with no mods installed? Make sure to test even without plugins like Smooth Patch etc, as their components in the install folder will remain even after resetting the My Documents folder.

I will test some custom patterns myself, as it may be normal for S3PE to not display the contents if the type of resources it uses aren't supported by the program. Other thoughts in the meantime would be some kind of file access issue, running the game as admin may help?

I'm beginning to wonder if it might be Windows interfering I know for awhile I wasn't able to save cause Win11 kept making my save Read Only while I was playing but when I would check after closing the game the Write permissions were back.

I always run the EA app as admin, which means the game is also launched as an admin. I didn't test with a completely clean installation of the game, as I didn't wanna go there because I'm getting really tired of reinstalling this game. Might have to try that today, though... :( Not looking forward to that.

Windows interfering with my game wasn't ever an issue I encountered, so it would be weird if that was the case. I know TS3 can be a bit buggy on Windows 11, but I'm playing on Windows 10, so I might be good here...

The EA App should have a 'Repair Game' option that will delete any files that didn't ship with the install and download any it finds to be missing or modified (making it safe to delete those files manually, should they not get cleaned out for some reason). Edit: Just noticed you mentioned repairing the game in the original post, but it remains an option for this too.
Smooth Patch is the main thing I'd worry about due to it having a direct effect on Create a Pattern, it may trip up the export in a way we haven't noted before.

Create-a-Style saved patterns disappear after quitting the game

Results of my own userpresets.package after making both an object preset and saving a pattern (which I'd never actually done before), on Windows 10 but game version 1.67:

The UNKN resource is normal, but the object preset also got saved as UPST (User Preset).
Showing as totally empty is definitely amiss- sometimes being empty and one time not, even stranger. Make sure the game is completely closed- check Task Manager for any of the .exes lingering in the background- before opening it, as it's in use whenever the game is running and that could interfere with S3PE trying to display the contents.

Both still present on reopening the game and starting a new save. Hopefully someone with 1.69 can double check if happens to them too, which would suggest it's related to the EA App.
No OneDrive or such that could perhaps be misleading the game to read another My Documents location?
