Lag and glitches when returning to previously visited town

The only mod stopping your Sims from traveling to the abyss. Did you end up there anyway? We'll try to help.

Lag and glitches when returning to previously visited town

Post by Elanorea » March 29th, 2024, 6:41 am

I had a Sim travel to a town, ask a family to move in with him, and then return together to his home neighbourhood. Some time later, I had one of the kids from that family (now a YA) travel back to the town he was originally from, however when I arrived there were some issues:

1) the game keeps freezing/stuttering every few seconds

2) the Sim who traveled back had his model distorted to child-size when idle. Resetting the Sim with Master Controller fixed the model distortion, however his career also disappeared (he was level 3 in the Magician profession). I picked up the profession again and later did a 'Reset Everything', and it seems his job gets erased every time he's reset.

Resetting the town did not have any effect on the lag/freezing.

Any ideas what might have gone wrong here or how to find out what's causing the lag? I was able to do something similar (have Sim A from Hood A ask Sim B from Hood B to move in, and later return to Hood B with Sim B) on another save and then it worked fine.

On further experimentation it appears the lag is related to the town and not my Sim. When I traveled there with another Sim who had never been to the town before, the stuttering was still going on, whereas traveling to another town everything ran fine. The glitchy child-sized appearance only happens if he travels to the town he lived in as a child though.

Profession getting erased on reset seems to be a general thing though, happens to any traveling Sim in any town, regardless of whether they had the profession before travel or picked it up while there - not sure if that's working as intended?

ETA: I just noticed the profession did not disappear if my Sim had gained a profession level while traveling. Or maybe the difference was that I had 'Treat as Vacaction' set to false?

The lag seems to have mostly resolved itself after saving and restarting the game. I did experience a crash shortly afterwards, but after playing for a few hours it hasn't reoccurred.

Were Traveler, Overwatch, and ErrorTrap in play when all of this occurred?
I have a few ideas what may have been going on, but it would clarify things a bit better to know whether those mods were present :)

Yes, all three mods are installed. It seems I was a bit too optimistic about the crash being a one-time issue btw; it's happened a few times since then, usually after I've played a few sim-days. It's not persistent ie once I reload I can play past the point where I previously crashed - some kind of memory issue maybe?

If you hadn't visited this neighborhood in a while, the lag was likely the entire town aging up. Could also be the cause of the crash too. Generally not a good idea to not visit neighborhoods for long periods due to the data catch up involved.

Professions/careers will disappear when on vacation. It should be there if you set treat as vacation to false and restart the game or travel home. Is that not the case?

Him acting like a child means his internal data is funky from being asked to move in through EA. That's usually a bad idea in a foreign world. I would prefer MC's Add Sim command and for even more stability, doing it when you're back in the home world so that both his full and mini sim references get updated.

Yeah, setting 'Treat to Vacation' to false did the trick wrt retaining the profession.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind for the future. Is updating the mini sim a concern even if the sim in question never traveled outside his home town before? I find inviting foreign visitors often doesn't work very well for me (when I invite multiple sims, at most 1 shows up; they will not come to my lot automatically but simply appear as 'local' in the relationship panel and I have to invite them over manually; after they leave the 'visiting' status does not always clear fully i.e. even though the visitor has returned home and is greyed out in the relationship panel, I can't invite over anyone else because 'only 1 group can be invited at a time' - this seems to resolve itself after some time). So I don't often do it.

Also, a bit of a tangential question. What I did with this game was have my Sim travel to Hood B, played there for a bit with 'Treat as Vacation' turned to false, bought a vacation home and properly changed his hometown to Hood B, then 'fake-traveled' back to Hood A to switch back to my main family there and have been playing them for a few sim weeks.

Now if I want to ever switch to playing the Sim in Hood B, what would be the best way to do it? I noticed that if I fake-travel from Hood A to Hood B, his (and I assume other Sims in the town) age remains the same as it was before switching back. But if I actually send another sim from Hood A to Hood B, the ages update properly.

So would it work to have some other Sim travel briefly to Hood B to update the ages, return that Sim home, then fake-travel to B again and select the household over there? And if I do so, will the Sims in Hood A continue to age while I'm playing Hood B?
