New to modding - please help!

Post by JoeyBottt » January 2nd, 2024, 12:58 am

Hello - so I recently felt the urge to play TS3 but wanted to proactively tackle some of the issues that make the game hard to tolerate. I tried installing Overwatch and ErrorTrap, but despite following instructions, I can't seem to find the NRAAS button you would select on your main sim/town hall. I believe I followed the download instructions properly - unzip the file and then drag its contents to the necessary location. Documents > Electronic Arts > Sims 3 > Mods (this folder had to be created). Upon startup I have no mod prompts if the mod gives you such, and as mentioned earlier the NRAAS button on town hall is missing so clearly I did something wrong. I'm playing on the EA launcher and am using one other mod along with them: Smooth Patch by LazyDuchess - https://modthesims.info/d/658759/smooth ... actualtab2 I'd figured they would be fine together since that mod even recommends using NRAAS mods along with it, but nothing seems to work. It should be noted that the LazyDuchess mod asks that you use a specific launcher included in the download, and whilst the game launches and plays I have no way of confirming anything is working. Does anyone have insight? Anything could be on the table as to what's wrong, maybe I installed the wrong versions (I think I am using V100). I want one of my favorite games to be more stable long-term, please help!

Hi there. Either your mods setup is wrong or your description of what you have done is incomplete. You can't just create a Mods folder and put the package files inside. There needs to be three, and only three, things in Mods: A sub-folder called Packages (this is where the mod package files go), a sub-folder called Overrides (usually left empty unless a mod developer says otherwise, which is relatively rare), and a special file called Resource.cfg that makes it all work.

The easiest way to set this up is to download, unzip, and place the Framework from MTS, which gives you an already configured Mods folder with Rsource.cfg included and a couple of small sample mods (NoIntro and NoBuildSparkles) so you can test that things are working.

A few additional notes. ErrorTrap is a Core Mod and thus does not add any menu items to an NRaas menu on City Hall or anywhere. It just runs, when it's installed properly, and you will get one or two Correction and Deref Logs per game session as it does its job cleaning up useless data. Overwatch, like most of the others from here, is a Script Mod and does provide options by way of an NRaas menu on City Hall and other places. The two test mods from the MTS Framework have no options, thus no menu items. But you'll know if they are working if the startup Intro movie is suppressed. You may or may not get a mods detected popup menu that includes some or all of these, but that's not really a reliable indicator depending on install type and a few other things.

Opinions are currently mixed on the Smoothness Patch. But we do know for sure that the MasterController compatibility file included with the 2.x version downloads is not compatible with NRaas as it claims to be and at least for now that portion of it should be avoided.

igazor, hello and thank you SO much. I had not set up the Framework, but after doing such, deleting my mod folder and moving the mods to that proper package folder, everything is working after I checked out the game! Along with being new to modding I'm also new to this site and community forum, so hopefully you see this. You're an absolute delight taking the time to help a dope like me.

Clearly not a "dope" since you use, or were attempting to use, NRaas mods and came right to the source for assistance rather than posting about it on, oh I don't know, YouTube or the X (formerly known as Twitter) or whatever else it is everyone else does these days.

But trust me, over the years we've seen it all and mopped up after it so many times that it's no bother and you're quire welcome for the assist. We'll be the first ones to admit that TS3 is just plain strange compared to most games when it comes to how it's programmed and set up to run, with or without mods.
