Lifetime Happiness points - I am speed

Post by ImLooking4someone » February 25th, 2024, 10:37 am

Hi
I've recently started a new game, modded for the first time (they are mostly error reducing).
I love Relativity, because I've always found Sims too fast-paced, almost nothing could be done during the day aside from max 2h of learning skills for job.

What I don't really like is the speed with which my sims gain Lifetime Happiness. I play long lifespan sims with default settings and Set Speed with value 19 (half the original). Apply Life Span Skill Factor is also enabled. Yeah, my sim is mostly really happy, but I often gain a few thousand points per day just completing some basic wishes. I believe Relativity doesn't touch Lifetime Happiness at all (tell me if I'm wrong), but maybe idle Lifetime Happiness points gain should be somehow addressed? During whole week I am not able to gain a single skill point (not that I try very hard), but gaining 20k points for rewards happens without any problem (again, not that I even try). It semes like this point gain per second is not relative and lifespan doesn't play a factor in it, and there is no option to enable this.

My sim doesn't have traits that could cause this. She even is childish. I know a trick with travelling to disable elated state, but she just lives a happy life. There's nothing I can do :angel:

Jokes aside, I wholeheartedly believe she gains points as intended for unmodded game and it's Relativity that makes the process seem too quick.
Is there anything I could do to slow gaining Lifetime Happiness idly(?) down a notch? (no SP)

You can actually adjust this with Retuner!
I managed to find an old mod that increased Lifetime Happiness speed, and by extension gutted it for the XML it used to achieve that.

On City Hall or a computer, NRaas > Retuner > Settings > General > By Tunable XML > Sims3.Gameplay.ActorSystems > MoodManager
There you will find a couple of values related to the increment used to generate passive LTH.

EA's notes from the tuning file on what they do:
<kBaseLifetimeHappinessIncrement value=".3">
<!--Base amount lifetime happiness increases per Sim minute when mood is >= kMoodMaxValue-->
</kBaseLifetimeHappinessIncrement>

<kExtraLifetimeHappinessIncrement value=".007">
<!--Extra amount lifetime happiness increases per Sim minute per mood unit above kMoodMaxValue-->
</kExtraLifetimeHappinessIncrement>

One way to check the impact of the mod on LTH points just to be sure, is to replay the same day (or part of the day, even when they are sleeping) a couple of times, once with the mod as you already have it arranged and once with the mod disengaged. Without anything drastically different happening, how do the two LTH gains compare?

Another approach is to make it more challenging to be happy. Personally I think it's fine for sims to be in a fair to pretty good mood much of the time, but almost no one should always be elated. I use the middle flavor of the mod linked to myself to help make things a bit more realistic.

I've conducted (really poorly tbh) some experiments. With speed set to 3 and camera set to follow, sim on full autonomy for ~25h. Below are the results:
A
Relativity disabled
Epic lifespan
Start: 20:44 - 6,955
End: 21:32 - 8,003
B
Enabled
Normal lifespan
Start: 20:45 - 6,957
8,000 by 18:00
End: 21:31 - 8,130
C
Enabled
Epic lifespan
Start: 20:44 - 6,955
8,000 by 18:00
End: 21:39 - 8,131
D
Enabled (Set Speed on Fast: 37)
Epic lifespan
Start: 20:44 - 6,955
8,000 by 20:10
End: 21:35 - 8,063
--------------------------
As you can see almost nothing has impact on LTH gain, so I was wrong to assume that my problem has something to do with gaining twice as many points per day due to Relativity..
Also lifespan has no impact - I'd like to see this implemented though.
Interesting fact - with normal time flow (A & D) I was gaining a little less points (barely - probably standard error, interesting nonetheless). At 18:00 my sim was getting a promotion. In B & C it was enough to get at least 8,000 LTH points, but not in A & D. May have something to do with the game needing more computing power per second.

As to the suggested mod - well it could certainly help, but I like my sim being happy. It is basically her thing. Thanks for the suggestion though, I didn't know that mod.

So it turns out the LTH gain buggs me only because my sims live longer than normally. I'd love too see "Apply Life Span LTH Factor" Relativity setting sometime in the future. Would be nice.
Thanks for the help!

Good job and thanks for the analysis. It seemed important to confirm where the unwanted LTH points gain rates were really coming from.

While we wait for our developer to comment on the mod alteration request, I'm going to put in another plug for Buzzler's mod. It's not that I want my sims to be less happy, although they really don't need to be in a delirious, drooling state of ecstasy all the time. What the mod does for me is make me, the player, work harder to get them to a place where they can be satisfied with things. Every nice (expensive) picture on the wall counts as do more comfortable furniture and better appliances and electronics, for example, when they spend time at home or entertain guests. Every small positive moodlet means more to them. But then they have to skill and work harder to be able to afford such luxuries. Skill gains on gardening and cooking (or just eating out a lot) lead to better food quality, and then that vies with other moodlet generating activities like having done laundry and even brushing their teeth for their non-work time in various ways. And they have to go to work/school in a somewhat sustainable good mood or they aren't going to perform well and be less likely to earn promotions that will allow them to afford items that give them more happiness generating moodlets in an ongoing way. To me, this is what a time management game should be more like.

Of course, other players will disagree as to the value of those daily challenges as we all want something a bit different from our sims games. :)

Sims gain points only when their mood is super, or in the mood bubble at the top of the UI. The formula is defined as (simMinutesSinceLastMoodUpdate * (kBaseLifetimeHappinessIncrement + howFarIntoSuperMood * kExtraLifetimeHappinessIncrement)) to help you adjust the values mentioned above accordingly. It is something I could scale in Relativity but I'd just be scaling those values.

Lifetime Happiness points - I am speed

Post by ImLooking4someone » February 26th, 2024, 8:45 am

Thank you! I didn't know my problem would be solved so fast. You are all speed!

I've decided to simply set kBaseLifetimeHappinessIncrement to 0 and see what happens. My sim gained 460 LTH points in 24h while being in the bubble most of the time, and this is an increase that seems more natural for epic lifetime. I'm also going to decrease kExtraLifetimeHappinessIncrement a little, because 3000LTHp/week without completing any wishes might still be too much for my taste.

You've been really helpful <3
