Transfer genetics in cats?

Post by Echoweaver » September 9th, 2020, 1:15 pm

My kid created a cat for her household but wanted it to be a kitten. I thought there was a way to set age state in MC, but I couldn't find it. So she used the cat to create an instant baby, then used MC->Transfer Genetics from adult to kitten.

I assumed this would make a kitten version of the adult. Instead, the kitten became invisible, and Reset Sim didn't make it visible.

Do I have a misunderstanding of Transfer Genetics? Also, did I go around the barn to produce a kitten? I can't find a way to do it other than breeding one in-game and then editing it in MC.

You can't generally shift a sim from one age stage to another, that's why there is no MC command to do so. Sims have to go through the age-up transitions (there are none for age-down except for weird ones defined in-game by way of LTRs and elixirs) or else they end up with data like traits and slider info that are not defined for the younger ones. Forcing an age-down such as through CAS also tends to break a sim's appearance and ability to animate.

I've never used Transfer Genetics or Instant Baby on an animal, so can't really say what was going wrong there.

Well, you CAN pull a sim into CAS and choose a younger age state. You just can't choose babies or kittens in CAS. I see why you can't create babies in CAS -- they're all the same except for skintone. But kittens/puppies are more analogous to a toddler or a child. They have their own appearance and controllability.

Instant baby works fine on pets. You can use MC to edit an existing kitten. Is there anything that can be toggled to allow kittens to be created in Create a Household?

I do not believe that the Create a Pet portion of CAS accounts for baby animals and, others may correct me if I've got that wrong, but this doesn't seem like something that can be modded in. For that purpose, if not others, they are considered babies even though they of course have much more mobility and actions associated with them than baby humans do.

What I meant was, forcing an age-down on an existing already in-game sim through CAS is not to be recommended because it tends to break them.

Really? Huh. Break how?

I changed an Elder townie to an Adult using Edit-in-CAS recently, and she seemed fine. That's the only time I can recall, though. Not something that comes up often.

Elder to Adult isn't typically as problematic and actually Adult to YA probably never is since they have the same body shapes. It's any stages to Teen or younger that cause issues.

Edit: Good grief, where are my manners. Welcome back, by the way! :)

Welcome back, by the way!
:D Good to be back! I had some technical troubles a while back and peetered out. A silver lining of being stuck at home in a pandemic for 6 months is that I finally got around to fixing it!

It's so great to see these forums still around with decent activity. You and Chain are amazing.
