I...might have. I don't usually, such as when resetting the town or lots. But if I'm trying to catch a specific sim before he goes to use his computer or something I'll pause, click reset, and then unpause. So odds are good that I had it paused at least one of the times I reset.

Well, that error means MC was trying to run simulator code while not a task on the simulator. For most things pausing usually fine but this opportunity is special. I believe occult changing responds in the same way. It's entirely possible that opportunity just isn't going to respond well to being reset no matter how you hold it's hand as well.

Ahhh, okay. So it sounds like this is probably just a Thing (advanced technical term) and now that I've canceled the opportunity, there is probably no lasting damage? I've been playing forward from it but I've been trying not to get too invested, just in case. It's such an old save, and I only had a few Nraas mods at the time, so things here are very different than all of my later saves. Anyways, thank you so much for responding. I know nothing about game code, but knowing that somebody ELSE knows makes me feel a great deal of relief.

No damage, no. It just means the opportunity would be broken after the reset and canceling it was the best choice.
