Export Genealogy Issue

Post by ThatSBKid » March 26th, 2023, 10:13 pm

Sorry if this is a known issue, it just seemed very strange to me.

I recently used the Export Genealogy function on MasterController to export the genealogy of the entire town. I imported the file into Family Echo but one thing I've noticed is that it doesn't export the status of couples (regardless of if they're married, engaged, going steady, etc.) if that couple is childless. It only inputs Sims as coupled if they've had at least one child together.

This is a bit frustrating as it means to get the family tree accurate, I need to go through and manually assign each entry on Family Echo to their partner. It's definitely an issue with the export and not Family Echo, because when I look at the raw file in Notepad, I can tell where it's assigning the relationships, and these values simply don't exist for childless couples.

I've looked at all the settings but I can't see anything to customise the genealogy export. Is this a limitation from the game, or an oversight? Just looking for some clarification, really.

EDIT: Also a question I have about it - the amount of Sims that it exported was over 700, but my total residents only comes up to 141 - it doesn't include any of the service Sims, and my homeless population when I exported was only 10 so it's definitely not adding from there. There's just a load of extra Sims with no connections whatsover, which actually to me makes the function useless as a way of exporting a fresh copy every now and then. Again, just wondering where all the extra names come from?

try to reduce the amount of sims by using the filter to only show real residential sims
Type of Sim (Or) -> Local

I tried my town export with the free windows app "My family tree" and it displays really everything correct.
EDIT: This tool also has a cool relationship calculator, so you can check if sims are related beyond the EA limit, like if you have a huge depth family tree.

And you need to RENAME the filetype ending scriperror.xml to ged and then import :)

I'm not sure where you're seeing that. If I go to the City Hall, then Town / Export Genealogy, it processes as soon as I click that, without any options for filtering. Same if I go onto a Sim and do Basic / Export Genealogy (which would only export their personal family tree anyway, which isn't what I want).

Renaming the file to end .ged didn't change the filetype, but Family Echo recognises the .xml format anyway. Every other familial connection was correct, and as I said it's not an issue of import. The relationship connections were simply not exported in the first place if the couple didn't have a child, but they definitely exist in-game.

I always use Sim -> Basic / Export Genealogy
and there I get the MC filter options, I am not aware of that you need a special MC module for this?

"which would only export their personal family tree"?
I don't think so, it also exports, traits, career, the lot the sim lives, lifetimewant and a lot more of each sim, but no family tree programm can read that information from a sims export.

What do you want more than getting all family tree from former sim to 6th generation f.i.?

Ok, I tested it out again and I see where the misunderstanding was. Whenever I went from Town Hall to Sim / Basic / Export Genealogy, it would give me the filters. If I then picked a filter to include the Sims I wanted, it would then give me a list of all the Sims that were included. Clicking an individual Sim would export the family tree for that Sim only (I use 'family tree' in place of 'all the exported information', as that's the only thing I care about). If instead I clicked the tick, then it would give a prompt along the lines of 'Do you wish to run Export Genealogy for [number] of Sims?'. My assumption was that would run [number] individual instances of Export Genealogy with [number] XML files created, each storing the family tree of one Sim - I assumed this because I assumed it had the same effect as if I clicked on each individual Sim in the filter menu, which feels intuitive. However, I now understand it runs one instance of Export Genealogy which stores all the family tree info of all filtered Sims in one XML file. Thank you for helping me get to what I wanted, but I maintain that doesn't feel a very intuitive way for it to be handled, but I suppose that may be a limitation of the game's interface than anything else.

However, I still have the problem that childless couples don't have their links exported with them - I would expect married couples at the very least to have an exported connection. I suppose it's a minor problem that I can fix up relatively quickly, but it definitely feels like a bug rather than a feature!
