Problem with blacklisting / CASP Editor?

Post by caccigirl » February 28th, 2022, 5:32 pm

Hello! I hope I'm posting in the correct place, if not please just let me know where I should be posting this question!

I recently read the thread here regarding hiding specific CAS items using Kuree's CASP Editor. I was able to download it and get it unzipped, no problem. Here's where my issue occurs: Upon launching the program, it does not seem to be reading any of my custom content, nor show any of the EA content (from the base game or any of my installed expansions) that I can hide/blacklist. Literally, I open the program and it's completely blank.

I've done a lot of Googling, have read any and all CASP Editor guides I could find (which seem to be very few and far in between), but no one seems to mention this issue. Everything I've read says that CASP Editor should be reading the contents of my DCCache folder and automatically showing all of the CAS items I can sort through and begin editing/hiding. I truly feel as though I must be missing something so completely obvious?

Also, in case it's relevant, I am running Windows 10, my game and all expansions were installed with discs (not Steam/digital downloads), and I am on patch 1.67. Also, here is a screenshot of what I see when I open CASP Editor. https://imgur.com/a/EnxQvQx

Thank you greatly in advance for any help!

If you right click it's exe and run as administrator does it change anything? I assume your Electronic Arts folder is under Documents and not on something like Onedrive?

Do you have any CAS custom content in sims3pack file format actually installed through the Launcher? These sims3packs are the ones that install into the DCCache folder. If you look at the bottom left-hand corner of the Easy CASP window, there is a drop-down box that currently says "Installed Custom Content" in your screenshot, so that is what Easy CASP is displaying to you but if you have no CAS CC installed through the Launcher, then it won't show anything.

To see this content, you need to click that drop-down box I previously mentioned above and select what you want. You should see the base game listed there together with all the expansion and stuff packs you have installed. The next two drop-down boxes to the right let you select certain categories or ages of CAS content within the base game and each EP and SP. :-)

Firstly, thank you for your response!

I tried doing the right-click Run As Administrator trick, but sadly that didn't seem to change anything!
Also, yes, you assume correctly! I have one Electronic Arts located under Documents (which contains these folders), as well as another which is located in My Computer>Program Files (x86) (which contains a folder for the base game + one for each expansion, each of which contain these folders).

Thank you for your lengthy response!

I do definitely have CAS custom content that was installed via the launcher (I'd pretty safely say that probably 90% of my CAS CC is in Sims3Pack format). However, I will say that I do not permanently keep those Sims3Packs in the Downloads folder. My process is, I put them in Downloads and install them via the launcher, and then once they've been installed, I move them to a separate folder on my desktop where I organize them into sub-folders (so as to keep everything neatly organized and easily find-able). Would this make a difference? Upon reading your response, I tried moving some of my installed Sims3Packs to the Downloads folder and re-launching CASP Editor, however it's still coming up empty 🤷‍♀️

As for the second portion of your response, I did also try selecting all of the different expansions from the drop-down menu you mentioned, but am having the exactly same issue - it's completely empty/blank! Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing when I select the base game or one of the expansions from the drop-down menu, if that helps! Also, I'm not sure if it's relevant, but whenever I select something from that drop-down menu of EPs, I get a pop-up that comes up for only a fraction of a second, and then quickly disappears. After several minutes of attempting to capture it with a screenshot, I was finally able to do so and see that it says 'Please wait. I'm working hard'. I assume this is probably something it does no matter what when loading between the different drop-down menu choices, but I figured I'd mention it just in case! As always, here's a screenshot in case it's helpful!

If it's at all relevant, I'm really not very concerned with being able to get my CC to show up in CASP Editor, as most of what I'd like to hide from showing up in CAS is base-game/expansion/Maxis-made clothing and hairs.

Is there anything else you can think of that might be causing this issue?

edit: spelling + additional screenshot added

No, this won't make a difference at all. A sims3pack file is just a container that holds one or more package files. When you install a sims3pack with the Launcher, the Launcher extracts the package file(s) and merges it/them into one of the DBC files in the DCCache folder. So Easy CASP is only looking in the DCCache folder for your custom content, not the Downloads folder. Or at least, that's where it's meant to be looking.

This is very strange. Looking at one of your screenshots (thank you for these by the way - they're very helpful) I can see you have a folder called "Kuree CASP Editor" inside another folder called "INSTALLERS ETC". Did you actually 'unzip' the contents of the downloaded zip file into the folder called "Kuree CASP Editor"? If so, which program did you use to unzip the files? And which version of Easy CASP is this, V1.5 or V2?

I've just taken a closer look at the files in that same screenshot and noticed that they are different to mine. It looks like you're missing a few files/folders. Ignore the "EasyCASPEditor.ico" file as I created that for my own use but I'm using V1.5 and my extracted files look like this:-
Image

Perhaps you have a corrupted download? Or maybe the program you used to unzip didn't complete properly? Here's a link to where I downloaded V1.5 from: http://www.simlogical.com/ContentUpload ... oads/1589/ Try downloading and unzipping again, after deleting your current files.

Yes, your assumption is right. That message normally displays for a good few seconds when loading the different packs. About 15 to 20 seconds for me when I load base game content. :-)

I believe I unzipped it? I definitely tried removing and re-installing it several times prior to posting here. I downloaded it from the link toward the bottom of this page, and once the download completed I opened it with WinRAR. WinRAR shows a single folder titled 'Release' (screenshot here), which I double-clicked on, revealing two sub-folders titled 'en' and 'zh', as well as the following contents shown here. I highlighted all items, except for the two sub-folders at the top, selected 'Extract To', and then selected the 'Kuree's CASP Editor' sub-folder located within a desktop folder that you saw in one of my previous screenshots, titled 'Installers etc'. This is a folder I keep on my desktop where I extracted several downloaded Sims programs/tools to, I have a subfolder in it for each (one for Delphy's dashboard, one for crash log analyzer, one for custard, etc.) I then double-clicked to open the 'en' folder and followed the above-mentioned steps to extract it to my Kuree's CASP Editor folder as well. From there, I simply opened that folder from my desktop and double-clicked CASP_Editor.exe to launch it (and also tried, as mentioned in one of my above replies, doing the 'right-click, Run As Administrator' trick).
Also, upon seeing in your screenshot that you had both the En and Zh sub-folders as well, I also tried re-downloading it and extracting both sub folders (highlighting them along with the rest of the download contents in WinRAR and extracting them along with everything else), but doing this did not seem to change anything.

Am I correct in assuming that this is the proper procedure to unzip something? This is the same basic process I follow anytime I download any other item that comes in a zipped file and haven't had any other issues.

Upon reading your comment about it possibly being a corrupted download, I have removed it from my computer and re-downloaded from the link you provided (which looks to be the same link I'd downloaded it from originally), but unfortunately am not seeing any improvement. Is it possible that I need to be downloading it to another location, such as within my Electronic Arts folder?

Lastly, I did want to mention, just in case it's relevant, that upon launching CASP Editor for the first time after downloading and re-downloading it, I do get a pop-up from my computer asking if I'm sure I want to run the program (screenshot here). I always select Run Anyway. But again, this only seems to pop up the very first time I run the program after I've deleted and re-downloaded it (as I mentioned, I've re-downloaded it quite a few times now).

I believe you may be making the unzipping process a lot more complicated than it needs to be - there's a much simpler way with WinRAR. :-) There's also a difference in extracting files that are used to run a program, in that they all have to be extracted together in one folder, in exactly the same format. So I think your extraction process above has made a few files go missing. :-)

First of all, are you using the latest version of WinRAR? That should be V6.11 available from here: https://www.rarlab.com/download.htm - it's the first one at the top of the list called "WinRAR x64 (64 bit) 6.11 beta 1".

Download that and install it but take note, as you install to make sure the "Integrate WinRAR into shell" box is checked in the Setup window. It should be by default but it's best to make sure at this point.

Now, to get Easy CASP extracted properly, try this:
  • For simplicity, create a new folder on your Desktop. In my example below, I called it "Easy CASP Editor".
  • Download the "CASP_Editor_V1.5.zip" file into that new folder on your Desktop.
Image
  • Find the zip file and right-click directly on it. Select the option with the WinRAR icon that says "Extract Here". (Sorry, I couldn't take a picture of this step).
  • You should then see a new folder called "Release" as well as the zip file:
Image
  • You can rename that "Release" folder and move it somewhere else. I've left it called "Release" for now. When you open this folder you should then see the following folders and files:
Image

This is where you need to run the Easy CASP Editor program from by double-clicking on the "CASP_Editor.exe" file. Or you can create a shortcut to that file on your Desktop.

Does the program work now? :-)

Sorry, I missed this part. Yes, this is fine. It's just Windows being overly cautious because it doesn't 'know' the program. :-)

Firstly, thank you for reminding me to update to the newest version of WinRAR! I was most definitely running an older version, and am now using V6.11!

I have followed your steps for downloading and extracting the file, and it looks like it worked!! 🎉✨ I was able to double-click and launch CASP Editor, and after having the 'please wait, I'm working hard' popup display for about 30 seconds, my CC showed up! I even double-checked each EP/SP, and everything looks like it's showing up!

I truly cannot thank you enough for your help! As I suspected, it was really was an obvious issue and fix that was staring me right in the face the entire time!

While I have you, would you mind if I asked one more question?

The entire reason I downloaded CASP Editor is because I wanted to hide a lot of the Maxis-made clothing items from showing up in CAS, in hopes that it will help CAS load more quickly (and also, hopefully, perhaps even help prevent my game from crashing every now and then while in CAS - which according to Crash Log Analyzer is due to a memory issue). I had initially been planning to use Master Controller to Ctrl + Right-Click on all of the specific CAS items I'd been wanting to hide (I believe this is referred to as Blacklisting?), however, after a bit of reading on various forums and guides online, it seemed like CASP Editor was a better option. Might you possibly be able to confirm for me that it would be better to use CASP Editor to hide a bunch of the Maxis-made CAS items, rather than Blacklisting (again, assuming I am using the correct term 'Blacklisting'?) them with Master Controller, in order to speed up the CAS load time in-game? Or would Blacklisting the items with Master Controller have the same effect, as far as helping speed up the load time? I suppose I'm wondering if doing it one way rather than the other is more likely to help my game load faster, or if it really would likely be the same either way?
