Mods suddenly breaking my game?

Post by fruit » November 11th, 2022, 10:41 am

Hello!

So my old laptop died and so I had to redownload sims onto my new one. I had no issues downloading my packs with the EA app but when it came down to downloading store content, that's when things hit the fan. I tried to convert all my sims3packs to packages and for the ones I couldn't do, I tried to install them via the launcher. Anytime I try to download a file, the loading bar would pop up and immediately close. A crash log appeared so I looked at it and I don't know how to read these things but I did notice that it mentioned the nraas cupcake mod so I took that mod out. The same thing happened but this time the crash log didn't mention any mods. I decided to take the entire mods folder out and hoped that would work. This time, the download bar would pop up and make it to the very end but it would say the install failed because I didn't have the latest update (I do). I have never had any issues with any of the mods I used.

Any suggestions for what I can do to fix this? I miss playing so much.

Please try installing your content into a clean user folder. Move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, open the launcher to spawn a clean folder, download a fresh copy of one small item from the store, install it, and see whether it works. Don't add anything else to the new Sims 3 folder yet, and don't try to convert the store items to .package format.

If the one store item works, go ahead and install a few more, in small batches. Worlds should be installed separately, not in a batch with anything else. The launcher doesn't handle large amounts of data very well.

I'd also strongly suggest using Origin rather than the EA App, at least for now. The App doesn't work well with store content, for reasons that aren't clear. While we hope EA will fix the problem, that hasn't happened yet, and I doubt you want to wait to use your store stuff. You can download Origin from the link in this post:

https://answers.ea.com/t5/Origin-Client ... p/11915666

It's fine to have both Origin and the EA App installed on the same computer; you just can't run them both at the same time.

puzzlezaddict, thank you so much! I was able to install content via the launcher but my mods don’t show up in the game. I also had save files and files in the library I want to move over to my new game but those aren’t showing up either. Any ideas for a fix? I wish I could move back to Origin but it gives me issues as well.

Are you sure you're moving the mods, saves, and Library files to the correct Sims 3 folder? It sounds like you might be putting the files into a folder the game isn't reading. The easiest way to check is by looking at the modified date on deviceconfig.log. This file updates every time you launch the game, precisely when you launch it, so if you're looking at an old Sims 3 folder, the date on deviceconfig will be similarly old.

Hopefully you're also deleting the cache files whenever you add or remove content. This wouldn't affect whether saves or Library files show up, just mods and custom content, but it's helpful to do regardless.

Thank you very much for working with me to resolve this. I do see mods now. I realized my save files all took place in a custom world that wasn't showing up. I downloaded the world again via launcher and they are now appearing in-game. I converted all my custom worlds to package files and merged them and since they aren't showing up, I'm guessing I did something wrong. I converted and merged other custom content like hair and clothes and I can see that they showed up. I had saved lots in my library and they aren't showing up.

My game also crashed after choosing a household. I've attached the crash log. Help is appreciated.

Mods suddenly breaking my game?

Worlds should never be converted to .package form, let alone merged. While most custom content can be treated this way, worlds and patterns should always be installed as normal through the launcher.

Did you merge or otherwise alter the files for the lots that aren't showing up? If you save a new lot, does it show next time you load the game?

Sims 3 crash logs are typically useless, but this one might be an exception. If this log is correct, you have 10 GB RAM installed and just under 3 free when the game was launched. Sims 3 was using almost all of that when it crashed. Pair that with the very little page file space available, and this could definitely be an out-of-memory crash.

Try again to start this new save, except this time, restart your computer immediately beforehand and don't open anything except Sims 3 and the EA App (or Origin). And before opening anything, check the Task Manager to see how much memory is in use. If it's more than about 3 GB, that's a problem that should be addressed.

Please also let me know if you've artificially capped the size of the page file. Windows would normally increase it as needed, up to a point.

Sorry to butt in here, but this is new to me. The DeviceConfig log records the amount of RAM free for use at the time the game starts up. I always thought that value on the crash log section was supposed to be the amount free at the time of the crash. Not so?

Mods suddenly breaking my game?

igazor, I was looking at this section:

Code: Select all

Memory load: 70%
Total physical memory: 10178 Mb
Available physical memory: 2982 Mb
Total page file memory: 11778 Mb
Available page file memory: 1552 Mb
Total virtual memory: 4095 Mb
Free virtual memory: 1285 Mb
I always thought it was at least somewhat accurate. The few I've seen on my computer are accurate, as far as I can tell.

I have been using the Multi-Extractor to do this with worlds for years, albeit a bit differently. I extract them, change their file extension to .world and move them into the game installation folder for worlds, I think it's The Sims 3 > GameData > Shared > Non-Packaged > Worlds. It can be done with both custom and EA worlds (though EA worlds require a few extra steps). I dont use the launcher to install anything, and my game is far more stable now than before. They show up and work fine. I am not merging them, however. There are definitely quite a few things that can be merged, and I would say worlds is not particularly one of them. At least, they shouldn't be. Don't try that at home. As for patterns, I do merge those. I'm a CC Magic user, and it works fine. CAP patterns are a different story, we know those don't convert well. While I know they can be fixed, I can't be bothered, so I only use non-CAP patterns.

Yeah this is a great way to use custom worlds, because you can easily test and simply delete if you don't like it :)
I do it the same way, also with my own created world from CAW.

I also use CC Magic. I only install EA store stuff via launcher.
