Game Crashes, and ACCESS VIOLATION in log...

Post by Ktarian » February 11th, 2022, 9:45 pm

I sincerely apologize if this is the wrong forum or if this log wasn't made by an nraas mod... ^^;;
In any case, I've had my game crash recently either shortly after getting an Error 12 message or while trying to save and getting no error messages at all. I looked at the generated log files in my Sims3 folder, and I have a xcpt .txt file and ,mdmp file for both of the most recent crashes. I've no idea how to interpret the information I find there though, so I was hoping y'all might be able to clue me in.

Game Crashes, and ACCESS VIOLATION in log...

Post by C-Dark » February 12th, 2022, 2:30 am

This is the report of the crash from windows, Error 12 is known for ran out of memory.
After a crash - always delete all files in the CurrentGame.sims3 folder in your sims 3 folder under documtents,
plus delete all cache files in your sims 3 document folder.
What did you do ingame when the error happend?
Is it the first time it happens?

igazor explained this error here with the link to to the "Better game performance" page with many tips (see blue links in the right navi).
post81705#p81705

But in addition, can you provide us with a list of all the mods you have in play (nraas and others).

Game Crashes, and ACCESS VIOLATION in log...

Post by Ktarian » February 12th, 2022, 3:17 am

^^;; No, I'm not new to the game in general.

I know what Error 12 is. I wasn't sure Error 12 was causing the crashes. In my experience of Error 12, which has been long and varied, it doesn't usually crash the game, it just doesn't save. I'm well aware of what to do when the game crashes, with cache files and also the current game folder. This is definitely not my first rodeo either with game crashes or with Error 12.

I AM new to these forums, and while I've been using many Nraas mods for years, I've never before dug that deeply into them before recently.

There might be one or two items on that page that I haven't done yet. The only one I saw so far is disabling the featured items folder... I tried doing it a different way than described here and when I did, the game simply wouldn't load at all. I can try this way. Unsure that one thing will save me from Error 12 though. In any case, I wasn't actually asking for help with Error 12. I thought the log might have a clue as to why the game crashed. If it doesn't, then I guess I need to explore other avenues.

My mods list is extensive. I have added a few new ones recently, so it's possible something there is causing a crash, but I have already used Dashboard to check for conflicts, and aside from the usual false positives, nothing stood out.

Thank you for the reply. At the moment, I think I'll leave it at that and keep plugging away at this myself. I have far too many mods to easily list them all, and it's been a very very rough week... but thank you very much for the reply. I now know that text file is useless, so I'll look into other things.

Thanks for the info, good to know that you are a long experiend player ;-)

I assume you have Errortrap installed?
Do you have any scripterror files in your document sims 3 folder ? you can drag & drop the file directly onto the textbox.
It would be good to know what mods you have installed, normally a list is included at the bottom of such file.

The Dashboard can not always show incompatibilties.

Edit: Concerning the Featured Item folder igazor described it very well, the easiest way, in my opinion, is:
"- Delete the FeaturedItems folder in its entirety.
- Create a text documents called FeaturedItems.rtf (or .txt, .doc, doesn't matter).
With extensions showing in Windows (or Mac), lop off the extension part so that the document is now called just FeaturedItems
The name has to exactly match the name of the folder that the game keeps trying to use."

What did you do ingame when the error happend?

Game Crashes, and ACCESS VIOLATION in log...

Post by puzzlezaddict » February 12th, 2022, 11:09 am

Ktarian, Just to be clear, the reason for this particular crash, the one that produced the dump you posted, is definitely that the game ran out of memory. The file doesn't have enough info to tell whether that's because of a problematic mod, something stuck that the game engine can't resolve, or just an overly complicated save, but the place to start is by monitoring the game's memory use while you play.

If the save itself uses over 3 GB almost immediately after it loads, or RAM use keeps climbing steadily as you play, that's most likely the issue. But there are also plenty of reasons memory can spike quickly when it's otherwise under control.

I do. Thanks for the reminder. I only recently learned that those logs were created by error trap (like a week or two ago?)... and I wasn't sure if the other logs were also created by error trap, or something else... hence my confusion. I'll add here the text of one of the most recent Error trap logs. I'm not sure this log was created after a crash. IIRC, the two crashes I had last night did not generate error trap logs at all, only the windows crash log, which was why I was focused on sorting out what that meant. Even if it isn't, this will include the list of relevant mods you were asking about.

Thank you. That's good to know, at least, what's causing the problem. I'm beginning to think I may just have an overly complicated save game that cannot be made to be functional, but I'll try a bit more before I give up on it. I have some things still to try, I think, regarding Error 12.

Edit: It is also perhaps worth mentioning that ALL forms of Story Progression are currently disabled in my game. EA's, Awseome's, and I don't have Nraas SP installed.

Game Crashes, and ACCESS VIOLATION in log...

The ErrorTrap error is a routing failure on a sim trying to participate in a protest at City Hall. It happened just as that session was starting up and the routing instruction may have been left over from the prior game session. I wouldn't consider that kind of error very critical.

But the log does show us that you have outdated versions of a few NRass mods -- GoHere, Register, and Traveler and those should really be updated to current versions.

Other mods I would be suspicious about are Cherry's Toddler Interactions (didn't someone else update this one years ago?) and Skydome's Everyone Can Carry Child (which may or may not be a part of a different mod).

It's definitely worth checking out RAM usage at startup and throughout gameplay. And perhaps a couple of test sessions with all non-NRaas mods removed (but keep AwesomeMod in as it's not easy to remove and probably helping more than hurting things) to see if that makes any significant difference. What begins as Error 12s on attempted saves can certainly end up being crashes as already explained.

Weird. But that's okay, we (generally) like weird players here. :)

Those are, I think, two of the newer ones I put in. I can take them back out for now, and research them more later. I don't have a lot of kids in my game yet, I was more preparing for them. I shall update the named Nraas mods. I thought I checked recently to see if I was up to date, but I may have only checked MC, OW, and ET. Thanks. I appreciate it.

Someone told me to try out Process Monitor about.... a week ago? But I haven't had a chance to really use it much yet (Mom was in the hospital all week and I've just been exhausted)... I'm also unfamiliar with it as a program and only have the vaguest idea about how to use it. I think I still need to set it up properly. I'll have to spend more time figuring it out.

As for SP... everyone has always told me SP can cause a lot of lag and be hard on the game.... and I'm clearly having trouble as it is, with my 8 household world, so.... ^-^;; I also didn't want any SP messing with my households when I wasn't around. I only learned about 3-4 months ago that I could use Awesome WITH MC, so.... NOW, they're all marked as chosen, and if I can get the game running, I'll probably try out Awesome's SP, because why not. But until I can save reliably... SP stays off. ^^;;

OKAY. I updated the three outdated Nraas mods. I removed Cherry's mod for now. However, the weird thing is that I cannot find this Skydome mod anywhere. I've searched in my actual mods folder, and in the child/toddler mods I have installed via CCMagic, and finally I just searched in the CCMagic content/packages folder in case I mis-filed it and couldn't find it. So far as I can tell, I don't have this mod installed.

I do not merge my mods, except with CCMagic, but maybe it came pre-merged with another mod I installed? I found the MTS page for it, which it didn't look like I'd downloaded from previously, so I could be sure of the file name, and ... it doesn't exist in my CCMagic content or in my mods folder, so I think I may have to take out some of the other Child/Toddler mods and see if it disappears.

That one has been having players scratching their collective heads for a while now, as we keep pointing out that it can cause issues. Does this observation help?
