Confused about University

Post by Bowlady1955 » August 25th, 2019, 5:56 pm

I've tried sending my Sims to University once, and it didn't work out to well. How long do they have to go to get a degree, and is it worth the time and effort for the increase their skill level when they get a job after graduation. I've tried sending my married young adults, and they received 45 credits, but they never got their degree, and after they finished their semesters they were sent home without graduating, the also got error trapped and I ended up loosing it. With an honorary degree they started at level 3 when they got jobs, is the job starting level higher if they have an actual and not an honorary degree? Thanks for any help and info. As always you guys are AWESOME!!!!

Cheers,

It takes 48 credits, all in the same major, to graduate. Each one week class unit is 6 credits. How long it takes to get to 48 depends on how many classes your sims take each term, whether you do one- or two-week terms (two-week terms are double the credits), and how much of a head start, if any, your sims get by having taken the entrance exam back home before enrolling. It is theoretically possible to ace the entrance exam and take three classes for a two week term to get all of this over with at once, but that makes for a very challenging two weeks with not much time for fun and not every sim is going to have the skills and experience required to get enough of those entrance exam credits to make up the difference between a full two-week course load of 36 credits and the 48 required.

At 45 credits, your sims are just missing the mark. They will need one more class for a one-week term, which will give them more than enough credits to graduate.

Since time does not move forward and aging does not happen while sims are at Uni, I never mind sending them however many times it takes for them to succeed and I find one-week terms to be more pleasant to play (for me, my sims don't care either way) than the two-week versions. I also like to send academically gifted teens to Uni for a head start on their advanced studies before they have finished high school, but usually only have them take one class at a time unless they are total no questions asked geniuses and like to work really hard. Or maybe they intend to have three or four degrees over time.

You can choose to enroll your sims in classes from a different major the second time around, but the 48 credits all have to be in the same one. Sims can keep being sent to earn more than one degree and can work on more than one at a time, in different majors.

The job and salary level benefits depend on the sims' Grade Point Average upon graduation. I believe that the LTR honorary degree way gives an automatic B with respect to these benefits, so of course an A would mean better head starts and wages in the associated careers with their major and a C would not be as good.

Half of the fun for me is the experiences my sims get in Uni World, not just the grind of classes, study, sleep, more study, classes. Besides that though, whatever happened to the notion of studying something just for the sake of gaining knowledge? Not everyone IRL goes to Uni strictly so they can get higher paying jobs, there's often a bit more to it than just that. Then there is also the concept (unwritten, in our minds only) of the Pre-Wed major but that of course wouldn't apply to a happily married couple going to Uni together. At least, not usually and if it does apply then the neighbors are going to start gossiping. :)

Thank you Igazor, couple of more questions I have thought of, if you don't mind. Can you start off at University at the start of a new game or do they have to have a "hometown" first? Also, can I build a house on an empty lot in the University world and then have my "new" students move into it instead of a rental? Thanks again for all the help, how you can remember all "this stuff" just amazes me.

Uni World is not a homeworld, so no a new game cannot start off there. Sims have to enroll from their homeworld and travel to Uni in order to attend. You can edit the Uni World map and build a house if you like before actually traveling sims there by way of Edit Town. It's one of the five EA non-homeworlds that can be reached that way alongside of the three WA worlds and Oasis Landing by using the buttons on the upper left side of the Edit Town screen. But your sims won't "own" the house(s) you build, they will be available as an off-campus rental along with the other vacant residential lots in town when you get to the arrival screen. That is, unless other sims in Uni World decide they like it and rent it before you get there. To ensure that doesn't happen, leave out the refrigerator and put one in after arrival (and pull it out again for next term before leaving). Inactive sims will never rent or move into a home that has no refrigerator.

Another option is to build a Homeworld University. That requires the Careers mod and is very much a Do It Yourself type of project that involves placing the admin bldg, the class buildings (possibly using rabbithole rugs if not full building shells), a student union, and a place for the interactive skill sessions to take place within a hometown and have your sims enroll locally and attend that way instead of traveling. That takes quite a bit of work to set up and use properly, as well as potentially quite a bit of local map space, but some players like it that way too.

I have no idea how I remember anything. On most days I don't even recall what I had for breakfast that morning. :)

Thanks for all the help, I might try the FAQ# on how to set a uni up in my hometown, but I probably won't I have found even with instruction sheets on how to, I struggle with adding stuff in my hometown (ie: watering hole, dive bar, etc for bands. I ended up making one floor very simple square box building and adding the band instruments. LOL the first few I did and showed my daughter, she asked me why I didn't put siding on them or something and I told her I didn't know how....so she gave me a quick course on how to do it, but I still struggle with all the mods, I know I'm not using a 1/10th of them the way they are suppose to be set up and used. But I'm having a blast with what I have learned so far, I'll get there some day and even if I don't, the simple things I use the mods for make my whole Sims 3 gaming experience a lot more enjoyable then it was when I first started.

Have a nice evening, and thanks again.

That right there is the entire point and what we love to hear. With or without particular mods and elements of game mechanics that we all approach slightly or very differently, the important thing of course is having fun with our games and our sims. :)
