can we change, edit the "environment" value on an item?

Post by Ghiby » February 7th, 2019, 6:56 pm

hi all,

this is one of the last questions it bugs me and after that, I think won't bother you guys much

I had this thing bugging me for a while now, but I didn't think to formulate the question until now, after using more in-depth our great mods here

so, can we increase or decrease, can we edit the "environment" value on an item? using one of our mods I mean?

I know we have available very powerful mods, and I'm using them quite a lot, but I'm sure there are some fine tuning aspects or tricks that don't know how to use or to make the best of them

as such, I assume it must be some kind of a way to increase/decrease/change the "environment" value of an item, any item, I guess I just don't know how to do it, so this is what I'm asking

now, to me, this is quite important, for my gameplay experience, as I'm using some items - say furniture items, some chairs, or tables, or lamps, or whatever other items, that are nice looking - to me at least, pleasant to the eye - yet, those items have no "environment" value, a big zero, zip, nada, to please my sims too...

in contrast, some other items, that are quite ugly to the eye - according to my own taste or standards - yet, have some "environment" value pleasing my sims, giving them the "nicely decorated" or "beautifully decorated" buff, and that's unfair, when in fact me, the player, I don't particularly like that "ugly" looking item

to be a bit even more specific, if I may, I love some high-end living chairs or dining chairs, those are relatively expensive for my sims, look great, to me at least, look very nice, they are also very comfy, with like 2-3 signs +++ in comfy, yet have no "environment" value whatsoever and I find it unfair and frustrating, compared with some ugly looking chairs, cheaper, less comfy, but those have 1 or 2 in environment value, this is just odd, out of place in my opinion, it's unbalanced, to say the least

so, if there is a way using our mods, to increase-decrease-change-edit the "environment" value of an item, any item, please let me know, I sure would like to know how to do it...

thank you all

You aren't bothering anyone here. Yet. I mean, it's not like we wish to login for the peace and quiet so we expect the message boards to be devoid of any questions and conversation. :D

The environmental scores of individual objects are stored in the objects themselves, not in the game so I don't think this is something that mods can reach selectively. The individual objects would need to be edited. How do to that would depend on the kind of object (its source) in question.

Package Based CC: A package editor such as S3PE is needed.
Sims3Pack Based CC: A program that can work with this file type, such as The Sims Resource Workshop (TSRW) or convert them to package files and use a package editor as above.
Base Game/EP/SP Objects: A clone of the object could be me made with S3OC and then edited.
TS3 Store Items: Might be out of luck there because of the encryption that protects these unless you have already embraced decrapification (that's kind of off-topic for this wiki though).

S3PE and S3OC can be found at Simlogical if needed. TSRW of course at The Sims Resource (TSR) site.

To take one of your examples though, if I have a bunch of comfort giving chairs that aren't adding much of anything to the environment score, I might try to balance that out with endtables or some extra wall art that does so and that I wouldn't have ordinarily thought necessary for that room.

In the GameplayData.package is where you'll find it
Here's an example the DresserEgypt

<kEnvironmentTuning>
<EnvironmentScore value="13">
<!--Range: Any float value. Description: Each game object can define an environment score to contribute to the room environment score when Sims are in it. It is expected that fancier, pretty objects will give a positive Environment score while dirty, ugly objects will give a negative Environment score. The score contribution is defined by this tunable.-->
</EnvironmentScore>
</kEnvironmentTuning>

It should be possible to reach these with Retuner maybe.

It has been my experience that Retuner works with classes of objects, like Dressers or Dining Room Chairs. Not individual models of such where the player wants to edit the object characteristics specific to one model at a time only, such as price, comfort, and environment scores. Have I been missing something?

It can't touch prices you have to edit the OBJD which you would need a copy not clone by using S3OC to get it. But you can change the comfort and environment of individual objects in the game files the problem is finding the internal name used in the games files. And you can reach those with Retuner mimics.
The environment and comfort scores found on the OBJD's are superficial and do absolutely nothing. Just like the speed rating for the cars you can change it from 3 to 9 for a Sloopy Jalopy but it'll still only use the speed tuning in the game files.

I use SOCL S3OC for that. It's fairly easy to find the object via thumbnail once you narrow down what you are looking for by object type and SP/EP.

wow, all this is interesting and a bit overwhelming, but I'll try it, step by step, as I have to admit, for some items the environment value of some objects - or lack of it - was bugging me for a while, I just didn't think to ask about it, until now when it crossed my mind it may be a way to change, to edit that score

thank you much igazor, as always your explanations are detailed and to the point, I do appreciate it

I may come back to follow up on this if I stumble and I can't change some values, as I never used those programs you mention above, but same as with the mods, I never used them, until I started to use them, so it can be done...

I'm OK with the prices, I'm not really worried about that, since with Family Funds I can change as needed when needed, but the environmental value, I will definitely try it, as that's important to me, to try to balance a bit the nice vs. ugly when it comes to some items

also I'm not much worried about custom content, as those usually come with a decent environment value, I'm planning to work on whatever comes with the basic package or expansions packs

like I can't even begin to understand how the developers, from Maxis I guess, how come they make a nice, chair, like the one I was talking about, top of the line dining chair I think (if I'm not wrong) over $900 in price, so not cheap for my sims, very comfy, like +++ and very nice looking, almost looking like a living chair even if it's just a dining chair, yet no environment value on it - I mean it's pleasing to my eye, as the player, the puppet-master handing my sims, but it's not pleasing for my sims, to boost their "nicely decorated" buff??
is not making any sense to me, how come they overlooked that...

and in contrast, some other ugly looking item, and cheap, is giving them 2-3 in environment value and makes them feel good, as it's "nicely decorated"... this is unbalanced, and to me, needs adjustment here and there

so, thank you again, I'll try working on that as per your instructions on how to do it
