Issue with two somewhat persistent game crashes

Post by dandelion212 » March 18th, 2024, 10:05 pm

Hi all,

I recently built a "retro" rig for some games that have performance/play issues on modern systems, and was curious if TS3 truly did run worse on my new laptop, or if I was just imagining things. I've been extremely pleased with the performance on this rig, most definitely with fewer glitches than my modern system, but I'm encountering some semi-consistent crashes. I'm attaching two crash logs that are more or less identical to every other crash log I get. One crash only occurrs randomly when loading items on the formal tab of a female Teen-Elder sim (either item type it loads by default; shirt or full body) and occurs about 25% of the time, the other has occured once every few hours or so during gameplay (with seemingly no regard how long the game's been up). I'm unsure if this indicates a CC/mod issue or something else. Most of the other forums focusing on the game seem to be very heavily focused on modern systems and patching/fixing the game for them and less about technical knowledge of the game so I figured here might be a better place to ask. Can provide more info if it would help; full specs/dxdiag all set to go if needed.

Issue with two somewhat persistent game crashes

Post by igazor » March 18th, 2024, 11:14 pm

From what you have described, the CAS crash is probably due at least in part to CC. Can you reproduce it with no CC present?

But my assessment, for what it's worth, is that you went a bit too retro with this system for TS3 in particular. You are running a 32-bit operating system with a total of 3 GB of RAM and do not have enough physical memory to effectively service the operating system and the game. When there is not enough physical memory present, then virtual memory gets invoked but TS3 is totally unstable when run using virtual memory.

How many EPs are in play, and which ones? The original minimum system requirements from 2009, which I am sure your system meets with flying colors, were for the base game only and no EPs. The heavy hitting ones require more resources than this and expecting game sessions to last for hours on 3 GB total on anything more than the bare minimum totally unpleasant to look at graphics settings across the board where the game is probably never going to get more than 1.5 GB or so to work with is I'm afraid not very realistic.

One thing that would help running the base game and maybe a couple of the lighter weight EPs would be a suitable dedicated graphics card. Does it have one (which model) or is it relying on integrated graphics?

Also, for what it's worth, without having seen the total set of specs yet I bet this system would take to TS2 more easily if you have access to and any affection for that iteration of the game.

Issue with two somewhat persistent game crashes

I see that igazor got here first, but I don't feel like completely overhauling my answer, so I'll leave it as-is and just say the non-repetitive part is about the usable memory limits for the game and OS.

Both of these look like out of memory crashes. The problem here is Sims 3 can only use 2 GB memory, I believe because you're running a 32-bit OS. The default limit for user-mode programs is 2 GB accessible memory, and I believe raising the limit to 3 GB is doable but unsupported on standard versions of Windows.

I don't actually know much about Sims 3's behavior in a 32-bit OS, for example whether it crashes when it gets close to the RAM limit or it can go right up to that limit. These crashes say the game had 129 and 130 MB memory available at the time, which makes me think the game can't quite use all of the available RAM, but this is a small sample size, and Sims 3 could easily use close to this much memory by default if all packs are installed.

At any rate, if you're committed to the retro machine, the first question is whether you only have 3 GB RAM installed, or you have 4 GB but the system can only use 3. For the latter, my understanding is that it has to do with memory-mapped hardware devices, which is not something you can work around easily. More information if you're curious:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier

It would be useful to know how the game's memory use is behaving overall: whether the game routinely gets close to its 2 GB limit with no problems, or it starts out lower and is at risk of crashing whenever you get close to the limit.

One of those is a C++ interpreter crash which is not easy to pull off given the engine is a static binary that is shielded from any funky state the scripting might get into. You're definitely choking it for memory.

I'd take the retro idea and put it out to pasture personally. This game runs fine on most modern hardware with a bit of finagling that is well documented at this point.

Issue with two somewhat persistent game crashes

I picked these parts out specifically for TS1/2 and some other games of the era -- absolutely no performance issues there, both run flawlessly and I've been having a blast with them. 3 was just a fun little experiment, but I am keen to get it working well on the setup in some form. Parts for the XP era are remarkably cheap right now and for as overkill as these specs are about to sound, I put it together for only $200, and it runs Crysis on high (and Ultra high with a slight hit to performance), which is pretty nuts. The CPU is a i5 3570K from the Ivy Bridge era, and it's got a GTX 670 that the graphics are running off.

All EPs installed, no SPs, ~30GB of CC. It does generally seem to perform better on this hardware in terms of lag than my modern machine, but slightly higher in crash frequency -- the long-running play session crashes I expect, but there are times on this machine where it happens 10-15 minutes in to a session. The CAS crash does indeed happen with no mods as well, but seemingly with less frequency, so I'm not sure what's going on there. It seems to happen more if I don't wait to start interacting with CAS until the whole list of items loads.

The RAM usage does seem to regularly sit around 1.7-1.9GB with no issues. Nothing crazy sparks the crashes, sometimes just sitting there waiting for an interaction like washing the dishes to finish, while two sims are alone at home; or sleeping through the night. I do have more than 4GB total installed -- the person I bought the motherboard from had the CPU & RAM pre-installed, so it's got 16GB, which the system obviously can't use. I was aware of the limit, but wasn't clear on the difference between running it on a 32bit vs 64bit OS -- am I to understand it gets slightly more memory on the 64bit? It wouldn't be a hassle at all to section off part of the SSD to dual-boot XP 64bit solely for this game if that would be a help.

I do wonder if it's a page file thing. I have the OS running off a SSD, and there's no trim command for SSD maintenance in XP, only 7 and above, so I have the page file disabled on the SSD and enabled on the secondary HDD. Using it on the SSD would require frequent insertion of the 7 install disk to run the command I did notice some issues with other things when switching this over -- Minecraft through MultiMC worked fine with the page file enabled on the SSD but refuses to initialize with not enough memory (despite the same amount allotted) when it was switched over to the HDD. It's got quite a bit of virtual memory; unsure if reducing that amount may help, or not. I suppose it would help if there was a way to tell the OS to prioritize physical memory for this application, but I'm not quite sure that exists?

I will add that I used this exact set of mods/CC (same folder that's gone with me from my original XP machine back in 2009) up until 2015 on a XP 32bit install with significantly worse specs CPU/GPU wise (Core2Duo and a Geforce 8800) and 4GB ram so I'm somewhat inclined to think this is something funky with the page file as I didn't experience these early-session crashes back then. I used to stream the game and have some old recordings of that, and the crashes are generally later into a session, around 1.5-2 hours in. Might be a question for a retro computing forum past here, but I do appreciate the knowledge that it is indeed a memory crash as I've got no idea how to read these crashes haha!

Edit: Out of all the crashes I've had, the remaining available memory ranges are:
Physical: 600-750MB
Page file: 8900-9000MB
Virtual: 40-200MB

A 64-bit OS would allow your system to use all 16 GB of RAM installed. Thus the game would have all that it possibly can as well (~3.7 GB if needed) and you could even open up a web browser or some other program, within reason, while the game is running without fear of running out of memory.

I get the point of the retro setup for other games, but TS3 is so...non-standard? delicate? unpredictable? (choose one or all of the above) that constantly chasing issues around on older hardware would probably sap the fun out of the playing the game for me, at least these days. But, of course, to each their own. :)

Cheers, I'll throw it onto a 64 bit install! I will admit that chasing down the issues is half the fun, pushing the limits of stuff is real fascinating to me xD. It took about a week of troubleshooting to get the SSD working as it's not compatible right out the gate, and I've got some games that aren't even technically supposed to run on XP going strong (Dishonored Definitive, Life is Strange). May not be everyone's definition of fun but I enjoy it lmao. Thanks for the assist.
