How to find a corrupted townie?

Post by helactual » March 4th, 2024, 4:49 pm

Hello everyone, long time simmer here.

I have a save that (out of nowhere, ofc) started crashing just a few sim minutes into the game with "ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 0x000003fc".
My other save (Sunset Valley) had no issue running, aside from a bit of lagginess since it's a larger family and a lot more sims running around in the town. The problematic save is a smaller custom world (Rosewood Park) and not even fully populated... the routing is kind of bad, to be honest tho.

After trying this and that to root out the problem, I made an interesting discovery: once I annihilated the entire town (sims, pets) except for my active family, the sim minutes ticked away without any problems whatsoever. Resetting everything didn't do much before, other than winning me just a few more seconds of playtime before crashing to desktop.

I think it's fair to assume that one of my townies is corrupted...? Either that, or one of the populated lots.
I have no idea how to find out which one is causing all the ruckus though. Any suggestion is most welcome.

How to find a corrupted townie?

Post by CardinalSims » March 4th, 2024, 4:54 pm

Welcome :)

It sounds likely to be bad CC, though there are quite a few things that can trigger crashes. If you temporarily remove all non-NRaas mods and CC and load the save, does the crash persist?

Also, if you have ErrorTrap it would be useful to provide any ScriptError logs it has generated in your The Sims 3 folder. The most valuable ones are the ones that do not have Correction Logs stated near the top, as those are routine and don't contain the errors themselves. You can drag and drop the file on your reply and it will upload to the site :)

Wouldn't the bad CC also cause my other save to crash to desktop? I'll check anyway, it's gonna be weird for sure since the world itself uses a lot of custom stuff.

It crashed without any ScriptErrors pretty much every single time, with one exception. I'll attach it, but it does have a Correction Logs so I guess it's not going to be much help.

How to find a corrupted townie?

Hi,

Most likely the problem is that you are using mods for game version 1.67+, but your game version is 1.63.

How to find a corrupted townie?

Post by igazor » March 4th, 2024, 5:33 pm

The incorrect patch level is one of he few useful things that this crash log does give us. The OP is running Patch 1.63 of the game, which is not current enough for certain mods to function properly.

Is the game source exclusively retail store discs or is it from someplace else? If an exclusive EA produced disc install, I would highly recommend the SuperPatcher to bring it up to 1.67 (decline any offers along the way to install or have Origin manage the game).

That did cross my mind. I actually thought my game was patched all the way, until just today when I checked it, lol... I have been playing like this for a year. Every mod I had installed had worked just fine (really) until I added like 2-3 more from MTS. Naturally, first thing I did was to remove those mods, but the crashing happened anyway. It will probably turn out which one I forgot when I'll start adding stuff back.

The other thing: removed all my CC. I will try to forget how ugly the game looked and cry about it later... no crash, few ScriptErrors. This one might hold something of value:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<NRaas.ErrorTrap>
<ModVersion value="100"/>
<BuildVersion value="0.2.0.205"/>
<Installed value="CurrentTip"/>

How to find a corrupted townie?

The incorrect patch level is one of he few useful things that this crash log does give us. The OP is running Patch 1.63 of the game, which is not current enough for certain mods to function properly.

Is the game source exclusively retail store discs or is it from someplace else? If an exclusive EA produced disc install, I would highly recommend the SuperPatcher to bring it up to 1.67 (decline any offers along the way to install or have Origin manage the game).

I feel a bit silly. But I appreciate the help. :D

It's a bit late over here on my side of the globe, but I'll come back to this tomorrow and slowly add my CC back to the game. And I'll take a glance at the Super Patcher.

This looks like some kind of otherwise harmless routing error that hit on startup where the game might have been trying to use ongoing routing instructions on these sims from the prior session.

But you are using a Core Mod (ErrorTrap) that was designed specifically for current patch levels on a 1.63 game. This may sound extreme, but if this were my ongoing save I would abandon it completely and work towards starting fresh after patching up. ErrorTrap and certain other mods will corrupt and destroy ongoing games on too-early (meaning pre-1.66 in this case) patch levels not by design, but just by their programming fully expecting to find current elements in the game core that just aren't going to be there yet.

Game: Updated.
Save: Loaded.
Culprit: Seemingly harmless pants CC.

You know, I think this perfectly fits into the authentic TS3 experience. Thanks to everyone for the helpful input!
