Crashing with unknown cause

Post by NorthStarGaming » February 3rd, 2024, 5:31 pm

I am so sad because I love this game so much but I cannot for the life of me figure out what is causing it to crash. The research I've done hasn't turned up much either.

I am playing in Twinbrook. I have not added any new custom content or mods recently, aside from adding DebugEnabler to generate logs related to this problem. The crash happens at about the same in-game time each time. The exception file indicates a memory access violation and points to dxilconv.dll (I know nothing about dll files). It doesn't seem that either the game or Windows are having problems with running low on memory...I am at a loss.

Attached are links to the most recent exception file and the DebugEnabler dump file (should be open access). I don't know if anyone out there knows how to make sense of these (the DebugEnabler file is especially long) or has experience with issues like this, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

DebugEnabler alarm file here

Those alarm dumps go on for many sim hours. The game isn't going to crash due to something that is scheduled to happen eight sim hours later. Around what time are we supposed to be looking?

(I'm suspicious of the combination of a ghost due to appear at 1:10 am over an urnstone and the dll failure, which is related to Direct X shaders)

Do you have ErrorTrap in play? Not only is it good at preventing errors from resulting in a crash, but seeing a ScriptError that lists scripts in use would be useful just in case we can spot something that could be the culprit.

And a somewhat basic suggestion, but have you tried running the game as administrator? That's my gut turn-it-on-and-off-again type instinct when I see an access denied report that isn't a memory crash, just in case your PC is being a stickler about read/write permissions somewhere. I've had success combatting crashes with that in the past, but I can't remember if it was the same dll or something else. No harm in trying!

The crash always happens between 1am and 2am, but not usually at the *exact* same time. I had noticed the ghost in the file but I didn't realize that could cause such significant issues.

I do use ErrorTrap, but I don't get a script error from it when it crashes. Unless there's a way to make it put out a log like DebugEnabler does? I'm not aware if that's a thing.

I will admit that I hadn't really thought about that because I never had this type of issue before. You're right, couldn't hurt to try.

Crashing with unknown cause

Update to this situation:

I ran the game as an administrator and my Twinbrook save kept going past the point where it normally crashes...but then it crashed at about 5:44am.

I tested another save file to see if it would also crash and it did not. I was not running the game as an administrator this time. I don't use all packs at once, so perhaps the crash is related to something pack-specific, but I don't really know how I would figure that out. I think my next move is to go back into the Twinbrook save and do a MasterController town reset before the crash happens. (I wouldn't normally do this until week 5 and the Twinbrook save is on week 3, but hey, maybe that's all it needs.)

Hey, did you have any luck solving this issue?
I'm doing some investigation too, because I have a save that crashes a few sim minutes into the game.
