Custom Careers: A Couple Errors

Post by SunriseYatch » July 9th, 2020, 12:58 am

So! I installed a whole lot of custom careers, and started testing them around with the Master Controller, assigning them, going to work once, checking everything was in order. It turns out that 3/4 of everything was, with the other 1/4 being a bit of a problem. There are two kind of errors going on, from what I can see:

1. The career is glitchy

The career can be accessed -- you can get hired, you can go to work, and looks like there's job performance. The issue is that the job isn't working properly. The name of the career is blank, and so is the job title. The job description is empty, too. The Master Controller shows something like ' - Science Lab'. There are no tones except the three generic tones all careers have. Other than that, they seem to be working? But yeah, it's like half of the custom content of the career is...not working, for some reason. I'm pretty sure it's going to cause trouble sooner or later.

Also, some of the custom careers also have a blank in the area that show the skills you need to work on in order to get a good job performance. The name of the skill/requirement doesn't appear, all there is is the face that represents how well you're doing with it. Seems to just be inconvenient instead of actively breaking anything.

2. The career simply doesn't appear at all

It's nowhere at all. I checked the list of available careers in the Master Controller mod, and the career doesn't appear in the list. I made sure to check the rabbithole was configured properly, and they all are.

-----

I compared the files and lines to careers that do work, but there's quite a lot to examine, and my knowledge of programming isn't really that good. What could be causing these problems?

Thank you very much for your help!

It seems some of your downloaded custom careers are not well set up.

I would recommend to remove those entirely, if you not wanna retune them by yourself or ask the modder who offered them.

Hmmm...I think I'll give tuning them a try. Which files or which areas of the code should I pay most attention to?

It's worth noting that my game is in Spanish, while most if not all -- haven't confirmed yet -- of the custom careers that don't work don't have English translation. Could that be affecting the career themselves? My own logic is that it shouldn't, since the language itself is not involved in the code itself, but I guess I shouldn't make assumptions.

While we are waiting for a custom career designer to come along, which I am sure will happen soon enough, could you share with us examples and sources of some of the ones that are not working for you? Perhaps a few of us here have already had some experiences with them in our own games.

So! Looks like the careers that were missing appeared, so that's fixed. The glitched careers still are around, though. I have here the direct links to the careers that are giving me trouble: Using a pastebin because this forum only allows a max of four links.

As I mentioned, they're functional in that you can play with them, no problem. I even found out a moment ago that even those that have custom tones still have them, I just...had tested one that didn't. Just my luck, hah. Either way, the custom tones are working too.

Still, the lack of flavor text is a little bit disappointing, not seeing the names of the custom tones is inconvenient, and if there are any opportunities they probably will be completely devoid of text, meaning they'd be pointless, so I'm still looking for a way to solve that.

Here's an image folder with what I'm seeing:

Also, I'm pretty sure the empty field in the skills is for relationship with your coworkers. I'm like 70% sure of that.

I hope this all is of help.

Okay, I looked at three or four of those randomly and found
(a) other users complaining about the same things
(b) potential patch level and EP conflcts
(c) career designers who don't know that patch 1.67 vs. 1.69 makes no difference to custom careers

That's where I stopped. And I would not put custom careers (or much of anything) in my game if they aren't going to behave somewhat close to properly.

The only one of those I do have in my game is the Professional Procrastinator one but I've never played it. Keep meaning to get around to it, but you know... :)

An answer to the real question, how can these be fixed, I would have to leave to those with more career design experience. But there are still plenty of properly working custom careers out there to choose from. Are you familiar with MissyHissy's collection? I'm guessing yes and you likely already have plenty of hers; she is still active and producing updates and more.

Indeed, I have plenty of hers. They're pretty great!

Alright, thank you for your advice -- I'll delete them, yup.

So, hm, I thought I should give an update, in case someone comes here somehow through a Google search or something:

The mods are working now. Turns out it really was an issue of language. Once I configured the game to use English, everything worked perfectly. So yeah, looks like when installing mods, you either only use those that are translated to your language, or configure your Sims 3 to be in English.

That's all!

Most people when they create careers forget to include the strings for languages other than their own. Each of the careers you've got there probably don't have any strings for Spanish in them; I usually include the string but keep it in English until I receive a translation.
In order to get around that, as most of those creators aren't actively creating any longer, is to create it yourself. It's easy and I have a tutorial written up for just such an occasion: Adding Language Compatibility. (I get asked about this a lot).

I hope that helps <3
