Home Schooled Homework

Post by littlelambsy » February 12th, 2019, 7:02 pm

Ok, another problem. My teens are home schooled and download their homework every day, then do it. When they just finish their homework they have the Green (Outstanding) status, then after submitting it and downloading a new one the next day its back to Horrifying and they can't get above a C grade. What's with the homework?

This metric is not used the same way that it is in traditional schooling. Newly downloaded homework has not been done yet, so it's always Horrifying (0% complete). Homework that is finished is Outstanding (100% complete). Whenever 100% complete homework is uploaded or turned in at City Hall in person, the sim gets an increase in their school performance score right at that time. By default that is 20, thus five outstanding assignments in a row with no days skipped in between will take a student from 0 to 100, so C to A, on their school performance. If nothing is turned in by the deadline, then they get a penalty instead. Note this includes weekends and I think holidays as well.

I have the increase in performance set to 10 or something like that, maybe it's 5 in one of my worlds, because 20 is too much for my longer child and teen lifespans and would make it too easy to excel.

In traditional schools, the homework quality (% complete) metric is used to raise a student's performance or not while they are sitting in their rabbithole class and not goofing off, socializing, or completing late homework. But with home schooling there are no classes so the metric does not get used that way, the school performance is added to all when the completed homework is turned in or deducted from when a deadline is missed. You can use MC to see a student's school performance score at any time, it's under Sim > Intermediate > Career (MC Cheats module required).

Thanks igazor, sorry, I hadn't noticed your reply because this topic wasn't bookmarked. Now it is :)

What is the deadline for home schooled assignments? I usually have my kids get up, have breakfast, shower etc, then download new assignment and then sit down and do it. They don't "hand it in" until the next morning when they download the next assignment. Their homework is always outstanding after completion, but when they download the next assignment it goes back to horrifying and I have never seen an increase in grade. Is there another way of doing this?

Homework is due at 10 am. If you are allowing your students to hold onto an assignment when the clock crosses the 10 am mark, then it becomes late and horrifying or whatever and the students will have wasted their time on it (except of course I am sure they learned something valuable by doing it, they just won't get credit for it).

Let's try this again. Choose one of your students and let's say it's already sometime after 10 am so there is no deadline looming today. What is their school performance score (not their letter grade average) before they do homework? And what is it after they submit their completed homework? It should have gone up by 20. I'm not seeing the point of having them hold onto completed homework until the next morning when it will stand a chance of being late if they don't upload or turn it in before 10 am.

Ok, not in game at the moment, but will check that out. I find that when I have them complete the assignment I dont see an option on the computer to submit homework, just to download it. So to submit it gives the another new homework. That's why I had them hang on to the completed one until the next day. I'll check you sugestion later today and let you know.

Submit and Download are the same action. Sims' computer modems can go in both directions at once. In other words, Download should automatically send up any completed homework, if it's not considered "late," to be submitted.

AFAIK, there is still a bug in the mod so that turning in an assignment gives the sim half of the credit that you've set. So, if turning in a homework is set to give the child 20 points on school performance, they'll only get 10. But they'll get the full 20 deducted if they miss the assignment. I usually set the homework performance to 40 (default is 20) and just adjust manually for a 20 pt drop if they miss turning the assignment in.

The horrifying/outstanding metric isn't particularly helpful for homeschooled kids. It's merely a reflection of the completion of the current homework assignment. It's not a reflection of their actual performance or grades. Homeschooled kids get a new assignment upon turning in (downloading) their required assignment and getting a new (extra credit) one, so will instantly get a 'horrifying' metric even though they've completed their requirement for the day. The new assignment can be completed and turned in for 'extra credit' if you want, or ignored until 10 am comes around and the kids get a brand new (required) assignment put in their inventory. I've used this feature to have teens complete multiple assignments in one day to: (1) get an A grade sooner; (2) once getting an A grade you can achieve the 'be on the honor roll for 3 days' wish in one day by repeatedly completing assignments and turning them in.

Home Schooled Homework

Ok this is what I did. The 3 teens got up in the morning (had completed their homework the night before), after breakfast, before 10 am they all submitted their homework (Outstanding and green). Then at the same time got a new assignment (now horrifying and red). Two of them sat down and did their new homework assignment, which then set it to green again. The other waited until later, after 10 am to do her homework. I checked her performance score and it was 30. The first two had a score of 40 after submitting their homework.

Right now, all 3 have a new undone homework assignment which is all in the horrifying red state. Two have a performance score of 40 and one has a score of 30. But, their grade has improved from a C to a B

Don't know if I did this right, I'm easily confused LOL. Also, I have a mod that makes homework done faster.
