Is there a way to have a university lot in your sims homeworld? I'd really rather not have to leave town to go to uni.

Yeppers. The Careers base mod and some setup are required.

My Sims Realty has some good downloadable Universities for homeworlds. That might be a good place to get some ideas on how to create those lots.
