unwanted houses

Some time ago, while playing different towns, I extended some of the houses to suit my sims. I then put them in the lots and houses bit to use again later. I have been using these houses without any trouble in several different towns.

Now, for some unknown reason, there are a row of them in one street that none of my sims want to live in. I have put the same houses in other places in this town and they are fine. But I get notifications that I have no empty houses, and when I move inactive sims into them, after a while they move out.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be happening?

I don't want to move my active sims there because I just have their house and garden the way I want it, but I suppose that will be the next move to discover what is wrong.

First, you would want to check to make sure that these lots are set for Residential-Regular and not (Player) Ownable. The latter is intended to prevent inactives from moving in. Next you want to make sure they each have a refrigerator, as sims will never move into or want to remain living on a residential lot that lacks one.

Sims will attempt to move out of a residential lot as soon as they can if they are failing housing inspections. Depending on your settings in SP (if you are using SP), these will include again having a fridge, enough cribs for babies/toddlers, single beds for children and teens, and double beds for everyone else (with some overlap, teens are fine with a double bed for example), a pet bed somewhere on the lot for each pet, and skill giving objects if you insist on those for sims who are self-employed. Back on the beds, although bunk beds should count as two singles, sometimes they do not register that way.
NRaas > SP > General Options > Options: Lots > Options: Inspection

Prompt on Inspection Fail will tell you when an occupied lot is failing inspection and give you a chance to do something about it before the family moves out. Sims, of course, cannot buy their own furniture.

MC's Focus: Home Inspection command, run on City Hall or an in-game computer, will list out the occupied lots currently failing inspection. Clicking on one will focus the game camera on it and display the reason for the failure so you don't have to wait for SP to cycle through them. This won't cover not yet occupied lots, so you do have to move households into them to get this info.

Or you could be having the reverse problem. If the lots as furnished and as positioned (location, location) are so luxuriously expensive, especially if you play with SP Money that subjects inactive households to property taxes, perhaps no one can really afford to live in them without going bankrupt.

If you aren't using SP, then this would be EA declaring the lots unsuitable and it may be more difficult to figure out why.

thanks igazor.

I have run the home inspection command - there are 3 lots that fail because they don't have a crib. but none of the ones that failed are the ones in question.
I checked and they all have a double bed and two double bunks and a crib. they also have a fridge and a complete bathroom.
The price range for them is between 15,000 and 23,000 so they should be affordable. Even if they weren't, that wouldn't explain sims that I put in them subsequently moving out.
I checked that they are regular residential lots. they are. the only difference is that they are owned by my active family as rental lots. This has not been a problem in the past.
I have been putting these houses in different towns for months now, and have not had a problem before.
I have moved my active sim family into one of them and am not having any problems with them.
I guess it is just one of those strange sims mysteries.

Slight correction, SP will generate a poverty (downsize) move if inactives are deemed not able to afford the property taxes or rent in this case on their dwellings. But from your numbers, that doesn't seem to be the case.

If you wish to populate these houses, you could place sims there yourself and then set SP's Household Options on them to disallow moves. I have several worlds where a street or section full of houses no one wants to live in would be intolerable because there just isn't enough usable space on the map to build housing for everyone as it is.

Hi Sheridan, I often use what igazor suggests, when occupied, go to town view and click on the lot tag and use Nraas > SP > Household Options > Household: Allow Move: As Family = False and Household: Allow Move: Solo = False.
See if that keeps them in the houses.

Careers that require certain skill objects is one reason they won't stay. A painter needs an easel, gardener a garden, an inventor an inventing bench, an architect a drafting bench, a writer a computer etc...
While rabbithole careers and some active careers can get by without the skill objects self-employed can't they won't be able too earn a living without those things.

That was on my list of Inspection requirements earlier up on this thread although I didn't stress it in particular. It's adjustable, though.
NRaas > SP > General Options > Options: Lots > Options: Inspections > Home Inspection Career Objects > T/F

But if the household already residing there is failing inspection for this reason, I believe that it should be showing up on the MC list of those failing and the player would be informed why. Not so?

thanks igazor. I need all my houses to be usable for the same reasons - no more space. I will try the SP suggestion to fix the problem.

thanks sitting bear. I would agree that lack of skill objects could be a problem, but the houses in question are the same ones I always use and that I have never had any problems with before. I have put them in several places in my current town, and they all work except for this one street.

thanks guys

Interestingly, I just tried to follow littlelambsy's advice. That row of houses, except for the house my active sims live in, don't have lot tags. Even though I moved a sim into one of them. There are lot tags on the other occupied houses in the town.

I will try a few more things and keep you posted about this fascinating problem.

Another update - I switched households to the house that I had moved a sim into (his name is Reg) to see if that way I would start getting a map tag for that house. I also used MC to make him a friend of my previous active family who are living in that row of houses.
When I went into map view, there was a map tag for my previous family, but when I clicked on the map tag, there was only the option to visit, not the NRAAS option that is on all the normal lots in town.
So then I switched back to my preferred active family, and lo and behold - there was no map tag on Reg's house.

I will try resetting things and see how that goes.
