Aging question, altering lifespans mid game?

Post by JohnL83 » July 28th, 2019, 11:53 am

It's been a very long time since I altered lifespans. Currently my sims live 1015 days total within a 50-day year. Each lifespan varies, with the adults lifespan being the longest. I do remember it was a bit of a headache when I went to my "longer than EA standard" lifespans, but that I got it all adjusted fine, eventually.

What I want to do is add just a few extra years to the middle age spans. Adding 25 days to both YA and A.

My question is hard to explain so I will give an example. So I remember that if I had a sim who was a YA and after my alteration they fell under the adult category, they were aged up eventually thanks to over-watch or whatever mod deals with that. But I can't remember what happens to Sims who end up the other way? So if an adult is now falling under the YA stage, will they be aged back or just stay the same until they reach the next age cycle?
I am thinking that my alterations should only affect those in the Adult to Elder stages since the span from teen to YA is the same, but I know that some elders and adults will be falling into the younger age stage after these alterations. Does anyone know how this works? I'm fairly certain Sims who end up falling in the younger category will not be aged back and just stay adults or elder until they reach that next phase, but I'm not certain and I'd rather now screw everything up without asking first.

On a side note: I really wish we could set ages per game, I hate having to use the same age-spans in every game! :(

If I recall correctly, age span settings are kept in either the Options.ini or User Preferences file. If you pull or rename it, the game will generate a fresh copy. Of course you'll probably have to tweak some other settings to your preferences. Just remember to use the correct copy of the file for the correct saves.

Yes, I know how to do all of this, but thank you. :)

My question is about what will happen to Sim A - an adult who is an adult age right now, but once I add 25 days to YA lifespan that sim will no longer fall into the Adult category. Will they age back or stay adults and just age up once they reach elder status? And if I do leave that adult alone, will it mess with things and make the game glitchy? I already know that sims will age up when messing with age spans a certain way, I'm just wondering about what happens when the opposite occurs.

I'm only asking if someone already knows. Yes I can just test things myself, but load times and everything make that a daunting task and if someone knows it can help me decide if it's worth the trouble.

I was only responding to the last part of your post where you wished you could set age spans for each game.

They don't deage. They even keep the number of days they have in their current lifespan I think. When the bar is full they will age up.

Thanks, I was hoping as much.

Gcgrad - that makes sense now. LOL That is not a bad idea, but then my old butt would have to remember which ages went to which game and I'm lucky I can even remember the names of the main sims I play in each. :P I'm okay with it all, it just seems strange that we can't set ages to each game. I mean, for one thing you can't even set the lifespans from the main screen, so one would think it's a game by game thing, because you can only change them in a game. So why would it set ages for all games and towns? I'm sure there's some tech reason for this, but it's still annoying to me.

I agree John!
I'm playing a couple of challenges right now which only allow for normal aging, which I tweaked to 100 days, but still within the normal lifespan.
But my daughter likes to play with super long life plus fairies and vampires, that don't age!
It sure is a pain to remember to go in and change the aging when we play after each other.
Lucky for me she's become a bit more interested in Sims 4 now that I bought her the Vampires game pack!
So we don't have to change the aging as much anymore, but it does seem a bit ridiculous that aging is global and not per game.
Did the devs think we'd want the same lifespan and season settings for every game? I know it's just a minor annoyance considering!

I shudder to think of how bad the Aging System could have been if EA had actually tried to make it possible to set different Lifespans for different games.
Play without OverWatch and the fixes it has to the Aging System and wait for the Aging Manager to go belly-up and you'll be glad EA didn't try to do more to the Aging System.

As I stated, there was probably a good reason for this, but it's still annoying. :)
