Moving issues...

Post by JohnL83 » October 12th, 2019, 12:55 pm

Perhaps I can find an answer about this other issue? What exactly goes into the requirements for Sims moving in together after getting married? I have had this problem many times and it's more of a nuisance than it a huge problem. But I am curious. I've often found that at least one of the married half lives in a home that is perfectly viable for the couple and I have no idea why my Sims are not moving in together? For instance: Today a new couple got married. Meryl and Richard Ellis. Meryl lives on a farm with 3 bedrooms, there are 2 double beds, each in their own room and a set of bunk beds and a crib in the other. Meryl has a horse and her stable has 2 stalls. She married a slightly younger adult male with a teenage son and no pets. The husband and his son lived in a 2 bedroom home, but no stable, though there was a barn. I had to move them into Meryl's home myself because the game kept telling me they were stranded, but I don't get why?

I get that it can occur when there isn't enough money for say, two YA who live at their parents home, to buy a home together. (though even then the families often have more than enough cash to see the happy couple into a new home) But I don't understand why I keep getting this message when the families can easily move into the other persons home. Sometimes either home would fit them! I've had two families of 4 living in 5 bedroom homes with plenty of beds and the young couple wont move in together in either home. Very often there seems to be everything both couples need in one of the homes so I do not get why the game thinks they are stranded? In fact, it seems like most of the time they wont move into one or the others established house but only into a new home if one is affordable or available.

One of the reasons that it seems difficult for just partnering up sims from two different existing households to move in together into a starter home is that by SP option unless this has already been adjusted upwards, this is under General > Lots, not a part of SP Money, they can only bring 10% of the source household funds with them. So if each household has let's say §75,000 in cash on hand, that only leaves them with 7,500 x 2 = 15,000 with which to go house shopping. Depending on what you have available on the market in your world, that may not be enough for them to find anything they deem suitable on their own. And not every household would necessarily have that much cash lying around to begin with.

SP Money adds the ability for those labeled as Couples (partners who are not currently living together) to obtain a Stranded Couple Loan up to §25,000 by default. This is adjustable under SP > General > Households but it is only a viable option for inactives if the SP Money module is present because without that there are no loans. And it will only help if there are affordable unoccupied homes on the market that have everything these sims need to suit their needs and satisfy the inspection requirements -- usually that means double beds for the couple and other adults, single beds for teens and children, one crib each for toddlers, babies, and pregnant sims, pet beds/stalls for animals. I've seen bunk beds in the past not register correctly as single beds for some unknown reason, thinking back to the Ambitions architect/design career where my sim kept getting yelled at for leaving the client's home in squalor or some such nonsense when they were really only there to provide some new office furniture or to put in a swimming pool and the sleeping arrangements hadn't changed at all.

But on the real question at hand, why aren't these sims moving in together into one of the existing households? If it really meets their needs entirely, that's difficult to say except maybe there is a force in the game of some kind that makes families just starting out wish to have their privacy if it can be arranged at all rather than group up with other sims they were already living with.

While this is often great fun to work through as we attempt to guide inactive households to make good or better decisions on their own, at the end of the day many of us do decide that we just know what's good for our sims better than they do and put these households together and adjust their finances/loan amounts for them in a way that makes sense to us.

And I think we all have our own odd stories to tell. I am reminded now of one of my teen sim's partners (also a teen) back in my main legacy world. The partner teen lives in what may as well be a small trailer with his two parents, two much younger siblings, and two pets. Both parents are very successful in their careers and they have as I recall around §150,000 in cash most of the time. Their home does pass inspection technically, if you call acceptable having three inches of space to work with in the bathroom, a living room so small that you have to go outdoors to change your mind (ba-doom-tish!), and the housing market is tight in Riverview but it isn't that tight. I keep waiting for SP to do an economic upwards move on this household but they aren't budging on their own. Eventually I will take care of them myself, but in the meantime the teen spends almost all of his non-school/work time at my sim's house anyway so I only get to see what his household is up to on rare occasions. :)

Igazor,
Thank you for this. Yeah, I would just as soon pick where my sims live myself anyway, but it was odd to me that father and son didn't just move in with Meryl. I did check to see if there were other things that the husband and son needed, like maybe a drawing table or something, but there was not. He was just dragging his feet I suppose since he married up and didn't feel manly enough to take up residence with his more successful and older wife. She has a champion race horse after all and runs a whole fancy farm by herself! But I say to him, "Sir, why did you marry Meryl if her success intimidated you? :D

And there is more than enough room to change their mind anywhere they please...ba-dum cha! :P
