Questions about re-installing Sims 3 and avoiding patch 1.69

Post by Cororon » September 13th, 2019, 6:08 am

I know this topic has been discussed several times here and elsewhere, but I want a few things clearified before I re-install the game on my new PC. I'll be building it this weekend. :D

I have all the EP's and SP's on discs, and the base game is from when it was released, so before 2012.

1. When I install the base game, can I deny Origin from installing? Or maybe Origin wasn't around when the disc was made, not sure.

2. Can I install the game with the ethernet cable unplugged, just to be safe?

3. Do I have to load the game at some point when I have installed a couple of EP's to turn off the Online feature in the game settings or Launcher? I don't want 1.69 to install automatically by mistake and have to uninstall and re-install again.

4. So, when I have finished installing all the EP's and SP's I'll just install the SuperPatch 1.67?

I'm scared. :P

Origin was called EA Download Manager when Sims 3 was released. You can deny the install of this and subsequently Origin when it changes to that name on later pack installs.

Sure though this is unnecessary, the installer doesn't use the internet at all.

3 - Just to expand on this one a little. Patch 1.69 is delivered by Origin, not the Launcher. If Origin is not installed, there is no way to obtain it by accident.

I have a question about this; What's wrong with patch 1.69 and why wouldn't someone want that patch? I'm assuming it did something to the game that some people don't like?

I got my game from Steam, so I wouldn't have much choice either way, Still, I'm curious.

Patch 1.69 ties the game to Origin. It requires that the game be started up by way of Origin, which then in turn fires up the Launcher and there is no way to bypass that like on 1.67 -- if we do attempt a Launcher bypass, Origin starts up instead. The 1.69 Launcher comes with an Expansions and Stuff selector that allows players to select or deselect the EPs and SPs they wish to load on each session.

Along the way Origin for many of us keeps losing track of which packs we have selected, it never helped anyone keep track of which packs were in use for which ongoing games, and it also kept losing track of which packs we even have installed. So on each and every loadup we have to count all of the packs showing up to make sure none of them have gone missing and that they are actually checkboxed if we expect them to load. Loading a game save that already had certain expansions in play with those expansions gone missing is either impossible or it will damage the game save unless the player realizes what has happened and quits without playing and saving. The whole Origin tie-in thing at least doubles the game's startup time and it was never stable. Offline play (no Internet connection) is theoretically possible if it is arranged in advance, but impossible to maintain going forward because that feature just doesn't work correctly. It's very annoying, but for players who can tolerate it and who are always 100% of the time Internet connected, it's not usually fatal.

Certain third party game utilities like Save Cleaner v2.x and EasyCASP Editor will not work on 1.69 installs, but we have the same issue with these on Steam installations.

The patch changes nothing at all about actual gameplay once the game is up and running.

Thanks, Chain and Igazor! :D

@JohnL83 What Igazor said. 1.69 can cause a mess if you're unlucky, and I use Save Cleaner V2.1 and other programs and mods that might not work with that patch.

I have all the parts for my new PC now, but it's Friday 13'th today, so I'm not going to start building and installing yet. :P Not that I'm superstitious.
