NVIDIA Driver update

Post by littlelambsy » September 4th, 2019, 12:08 am

Someone suggested that I update my nVIDIA Driver, but I'm scared to LOL. I figure if it ain't giving me a problem, don't touch it! If I do update it, will I have to reconfigure my tech stuff? or will it just update and not give me a panic attack? Just need some feedback on this before I touch anything.

When updating your grafic driver then your sims 3 game options will reset, like age of teen, YA etc and grafic settings.
To avoid this
- make a copy of your option.ini file in your sims 3 document folder like option_save.ini,
- after updating the driver start game, but don't start your save game and quit
- then open the copy of your option.ini and the original one with notepad++ or other text editor
- in the original search for term ID, I think its called "last ID"
- copy the number behind it and overwrite the last ID number in your save copy version, save this
- then mark all, copy and paste, overwrite all in the original options.ini
- save it and ready

It's actually called "lastdevice".

littlelambsy - ^^ That's what you need to look for in this step. Use Ctrl+F on your keyboard to bring up a search box in Notepad or Notepad++ to make it easier to find. Basically, you need to replace the lastdevice number in your current Options.ini file with the one from the newly created Options.ini file. Then use your current Options.ini file and delete the newly created one. :-)

Thanks Sarah, yeah it is the "lastdevice" number. I wasn't at my PC so could not remember ;-)

But I recommend not to only replace the files.
Nvidia Updates happen very often and if you forget about to make a new copy of the options.ini befor updating, and start the game, well then your settings are gone. So better always keep an options_Save-Settings.ini in your Sims3 folder, so this file is sorted right after the original one ;-)
And when you change your settings inbetween you also need to update your Save, just in case you forget about it.
Open the original options.ini, overwrite it via save as mark your save file and save.

Good idea thanks. I turned off all my windows updates so i hardly ever update my computer. Those sneaky little devils upgraded my windows to w10 while i was out. When i came home and found a blue screen with "next" flashing, it took me a moment to realize what it was. Then i has a complete panic attack before i saw the little writing that said "not mollyann". LOL I clicked that and it put me back to windows 7. It was a very traumatic experience LOL. So i shut down my windows update and i no touchy anything now. I figure if it still works and runs smoothly, im good to go. :) just curious, but if i don't update what can be the results? Is it really necessary to update?

We are talking about Nvidia driver updates: They say this
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers ... ay-drivers

I do not know what grafic card you have, is it an old one? Then you might not need to update
  1. Right click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Click System Information in the bottom left corner.
  3. In the Display tab your GPU is listed in the Components column.

I took a look but couldn't find the Components Column" there is a components tab. I took a picture of the Display tab here and here. Does that help?

Thanks, what I can tell, this model is from 2014, but hopefully some technichal nerds can stop by and tell us more
The first picture there in the left collumn, yours is the GTX 750 TI.

I have the GTX 970 and do the driver updates regularly (mine was also launched 2014, but is higher one).
