Sims and the weather

Is there anything that controls Sims' response - or lack of same - to the weather? Will they/can they avoid the rain, stay inside more when it's cold? Atm my Sims tend to have long chats in the pouring rain, or flirt happily during hailstorms!

Short answer - no, they're stupid. As evidenced by my sim who had an entire huge house available and still went outside to talk on the phone during a thunderstorm, promptly got struck by lightning and then proceeded to rage at the skies, shaking fists at them as if they were somehow to blame she's a moron.

They'll (mostly) change into outerwear and use umbrellas and parasols when they have them in the inventory, but that's about the extent of it. You can't really expect advanced logical decisions like not sunbathing at midnight during a hailstorm or choosing a place to busk that's not in waist-deep snow... At least I've never seen it happen.

Are you trying to imply that this is not a "normal" thing to do? Sometimes I wonder why my neighbors stare at me in apparent disbelief so often, usually though I don't pay any attention.

LMAO! Yep! My sims live in a huge mansion and have a large dining room with 8 settings and the kitchen has a bar with 4 stools, a total of 12 places to sit in their nice warm home. Yet these morons head outside to the picnic table in the blowing snow with freezing temperatures to eat their nice hot meal. And sometimes they even sit on the outside benches to read a nice book until they stand up at books end and freeze solid. :-o All this in their pajamas too!

Honestly I wish there WAS a way for dev's or even modders to re-route our Sims to stay inside during bad weather, especially for things 99.9% of the population would stay in side to do when the weather is bad.
It's sort of like how they will let the cat stop them on the way to the bathroom and it wants to be brushed or play or something and once the Sim is done with whatever activity they pee themselves. Nice...:| yet it's all perfectly sane behavior for Sims.

The worst to happen to me was I left the baby at home with several Sims while my active sim was running about town doing her stylist thingy, I kept looking over to see the baby was in the red. But I thought, surely someone will take care of that, they are home and autonomous...and usually always get the kid.....but I'd forgotten how easily sims get distracted from important duties, especially when pets are in the house! I had child services called and lost the baby! And then oops...I quit the game without saving.

Sims already have this programmed into their autonomy but how it reacts varies by things like your current game autonomy back log, what objects are on their lot and their motives. They get cues from the core to react that can be ignored if your game is struggling already or if they really need to fulfill a motive and the option that seems illogical to you is the only one. Objects also have ratings on them and if the one with the better rating is outside they are bolting to it. Certain things like socializing isn't interrupted though. I guess EA thought that annoying to the player. Things like Jig placement also doesn't test weather and can result in them routing outside for socials in a hail storm.

I just noticed my sim's next door neighbour holding her baby while talking to another sim outside in a snowstorm. Then she put the baby down in the snow and walked off. I waited for several sim hours, then when the baby started crying (not because of freezing, but because she was lonely) I reset her to a safe place.
Even if it hadn't been in the middle of a snowstorm, what a dodgy mother just putting her on the ground and walking off!!!

Sims don't do that to be neglectful. They just don't know/were never programmed any better. To them on the grass or in a snowbank on their front lawn is just as safe a place to set a baby down as their living room, it is their own home lot after all (presumably or at least a lot they are comfortable being on).

Sims can be completely nuts! I had one take her newborn grandson to graduation and she left him out on the snowy steps of City Hall until the ceremony was over. Because having him stay with a sitter would be so much worse? The first family sim out the door, his grandfather I believe, was ordered to pick up the now screaming child and go home! As for routing and eating out in hailsstorms or blizzards---I stopped placing tables outside which I thought would solve the problem. Nope, they just held their plates in their hands knee deep in snow and ate their birthday cake! Sims gotta luv 'em!
