Irrevocably damaged??

Post by JohnL83 » March 23rd, 2019, 2:37 pm

I can't save my Sunset Valley game anymore without getting an Error 12. I've tried everything I can think of. It still plays just great. I don't even get but maybe one script error or routing error during play.
I did a total reset of the town. Then I did it again. Still I can't save. I went back to an older game and used a backup one and it too played fine, but I couldn't save without the E12. I did delete the "bad" game from the save files as well. Sadly I only had 2 backups to go back to and none of them will save now without E12. I did get one extra save out of the oldest backup. But now it's giving me 12 too. No matter if I play for 15 or 30 min before saving. This really sucks. It's my favorite and very first game and first and favorite sim family.
I have played and deleted other games without too much regret, but I am pretty bummed about this. Are there any suggestions out there for me or it this game irrevocably damaged?

Also, this is not happening in any of my other games right now. I played one of my newer ones for 3 hours yesterday and got 5 good saves.

Have you considered Portering up your favorite households from this world and moving them to a new one?

I will try that.
If I'm honest I really only want the sims closely tied to my main family, which is a decent amount, but not too huge of a number. Maybe 50 or so sims. Just how good is that mod?

It's dreadful, like all of our mods are (just kidding). :P

To be honest, I have never used Porter because all of my worlds are Traveler mod connected within the same game so I can bring sims back and forth using other methods. But it has a very loyal following. The worst things that can happen are that it fails on the packing up and you get errors or it fails upon unloading in the target world and you get errors. But those kinds of failures don't harm anything, they would just result in wastes of time, potentially.

Here is an illustrated tutorial, or rather a page that links to one, in case you don't already have it marked.
Porter-FAQ

Don't forget to allow for any deceased sims you care about or who are required to preserve family relationships among the living packed up sims by being sure their remains come along with everyone else. Unlike with Traveler moves, any sims left behind living or dead will no longer exist in the new world/game, so that can break family trees if sims who had a common ancestor no longer do so.

You may want to experiment at first with a very small pack, more like two or three households and no more than 10 sims to see how it goes. The interesting thing here, with a pack of any size that works, would be to see if the Error 12 problems follow you over to the new world or not. If the new world is already known to be "safe" to play properly, then that would tell us if the issues really were with your progressed version of SV or the sims you are playing themselves, actively or as inactive residents.

Well guess what. :) I'd already read through the tutorial before reading your post. I went ahead and tried this last night. I'm not sleeping well since my surgery and these crappy pain meds keep me awake, so I had time. I figured what do I have to lose? The game is screwed and even if this doesn't work, the original game will still be there. It worked perfectly. I managed to move 81 sims in my first try and in a very reasonable amount of time, including their deceased. Now I just have to relocate them all, as the system puts the families in all kinds of odd housing and my main family, the wealthiest, didn't end up in a very nice home. LOL. A minor thing though really since it worked so perfectly I was impressed. It was so good and it actually worked faster than the original game takes to load!

Hmmmm, Just an update. Yes my transfer of the main sims to another town worked. But guess what? Just like when you try to get someone to "hear that noise the car makes" everything is fine once again in my original game. I played today, just out of curiosity, for about 2 hours and was able to successfully save every 30 min. But then during a sims funeral the whole thing crashed, but I was saved up to just before the funeral started, so no huge deal. IDK why it suddenly started behaving, but whatever. Now I do not know if I want to keep playing or just move on to the new version.

If you really want to tempt fate, you could on a copy of the original world use MC to TA everyone (except one sim as a placeholder) and unpack your Portered up sims back into it. I probably would not do that, as it wouldn't be as much fun waiting for the problems to reappear around every corner than it would be to play forward in an environment that from the sound of it seems to be working out much better.

I think I may just keep both games for now and use the newer one with the Porter sims as a safe back up. I like my original town and put a lot into it and my main family knows almost everyone. Which is over 150 sims. Which may be part of the issue. I did drop my towns all down to 120 max, but SV had already maxed out before I made that change so now it's just waiting for the population to drop back down. There are at least a dozen sims who are at or just past max age, so if I can keep it going things may drop down and it could end up being fine. I hope. :) I may also help things along with a few of the sideline sims I never see anyway...but not all at once.
