Glad you like my point system. I had a few other thoughts with this as well. For instance, children and even toddlers gain skill by using the activity table, bakers oven and other skills. When the sim reaches teen years, I was going to deduct (point wise) the skill levels gained as a child/toddler. So the points would start at teen years. Then, when they reach YA and want to study for a degree, I only count half the gained skill levels at teen years. Also, because teens can gain skills by studying for hours and rack the levels up quickly, I thought about only allowing them to "study" skills for a about 3 sim hours/day. The rest can be gained by actually doing the skill, like cooking, swimming etc.
Now I have to go back over all that I set out and write it down or I'll forget what I'm doing LOL

To make it more real, I've made another adjustment in these requirements. For my way of playing, I'm not going to allow my sims to advance in their career until they've gained the proper requirements. For example, for Medical, no sim can become a Medical intern without completing an apprenticeship first and can never become a Resident or Trauma Surgeon without a full degree.
If my sim is working at the hospital toward becoming a doctor, then I will change his career to the apprenticeship program, then when that is complete, I'll reinstate him in the medical and give him the needed level with MC. If the game advances my sim before qualified, I'll use MC to remove it.
Also, with sims traveling to gain experience and skills in their chosen major, I will grant 1.5 credits per skill level.
Just thought I'd share my thoughts. I'm going to play this out and see how it works. It will certainly take longer for some to get a degree than others, which makes more sense. It takes many years to become a doctor so I don't think two semesters at university will produce a doctor that I would want to see LOL. Time and effort makes more sense.

Ok, I've finally got this system perfected and posted up on my website here. I think this is going to be much more fun to play than the uni world. All I have to do now is play test it. I already have my 4 students ready to go LOL. Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Roochey. I think your careers are perfect just the way they are. At the moment its the middle of winter in my game and my test students had no skills at all. So, its slow going at the moment but they've each managed to gain 1 credit (skill) toward their goals. They all have jobs but will not be able to progress far without some kind of study/ apprenticeship but haven't got that far yet. That's when I'll be putting your careers and MissyHissy's apprenticeships into play. It all looks good on paper, but playing this out will see where it needs tweaking.
One of my students is in the self employed Photographers career. I did this so I could see how this system will work with self-employed careers. He can't earn any money yet in this field, so he'll have to find things to sell to make money to travel to Egypt and buy a good camera. Then I have one sim who seems to always want to be in bed even when he's not tired. LOL So he'll have to smarten up

Just an update for those who are interested in this new approach to university. I've posted the tweaked system on my website and have started playing 4 test students. You can follow the students progress and see how it plays out. I update it regularly so stay tuned
