Roommate Services ???

Post by JohnL83 » October 17th, 2018, 12:34 am

Something keeps turning on my roommate services. It used to happen whenever I would switch homes in a game,  I just figured it was some glitch that occurs now and then when I switch homes in Sims3. But I started a new game a few days ago and some times when I come back to play this game, 7 other roommates show up in my one bedroom home!  I have not switched homes in this game. I have spent some time in Build mode adding homes, lots and apartments for other sims. But I don't plan on doing that in this game. I am trying out a "start from scratch" kind of thing where I try to play as vanilla as possible, at least when playing my one sim. I'm still using the mods to fill the town a bit and keep annoying things from going on.
What is the deal here and how can I turn it off permanently?  I don't want roommates (especially in a one bedroom home!) I'm okay with roommates at University, but this sim wont be going there either, he's starting as a YA with nothing and working his way up the "natural" way!

Roommate Services ???

Retreat to Edit Town and take a look at the lot type being used. If the type is Residential-Apartment, then this is exactly what is supposed to happen. The Uni style "Apartment" lots have the town's Roommate Service permanently engaged for the maximum number of roommates -- the difference between 8 and the number of sims you have living there. There is no way to switch it off. The name of the lot type is misleading, that kind of "Apartment" is actually the Dormitory concept from Uni World ported over to homeworlds and is not to be confused (but often is) with LN style "Apartments" that involve the call box, public/private room markers, and NPC-only doors.

If this is what is going on, you either get to enjoy having 7 strangers sharing your living space or you have to change the lot type. In order to change it, from within Edit Town evict everyone to the side of the map, change it to Commercial-No Visitors Allowed (or something like that), then Residential-Regular. If you make the change directly to Regular it probably won't stick due to a game bug.

If the lot is already Regular and you cannot call up the Roommate Service by phone to cancel, then I would have to say that there is something wrong with the entire lot because it is behaving contrary to its lot type.

Roommate Services ???

There's a Mod from MTS that's supposed to fix this if it's being caused by having a lot zoned as a UL style apartment lot and it also made the enabled and disabled state of the roommate service gated to the household instead of it being a global setting. Here's theAPARTMENT FIX

Roommate Services ???

Yes Tad, but it has not been determined if the OP wants an apartment type of lot of any kind. It sounds to me like he was expecting the lot(s) in question to behave as if they were ordinary lots for outright purchase and residence, as Residential-Regular would be, not one that is rentable with payments made to a landlord but no real property ownership or equity being established for the resident sim(s).

Roommate Services ???

No my lot is a regular lot. I only have a few lots in my towns that have the 'apartment" status. And it's always deliberate.  I am able to turn off the services via the phone as soon as they all appear and generally they all leave right away. It's just annoying to have to do every time.
Igazor,  I am taking from your description of what the game calls "apartment" isn't such a good idea, so would you suggest that I not have my apartment buildings listed as apartments? The sims I put there (usually singles) generally stay until they hook up or marry.   What I did was make a few 3 and 4 story buildings that have multiple bedrooms (sort of like the UL dorms only nicer) I add all the facilities: ie I usually put a small kitchen on each floor along with one good-size community work-out room, a game room and study that can often include all the things like dry-erase boards, the anatomy skeleton, chemistry stations, easels...etc. and even a small room with pet amenities.  When I just made those type of buildings and place them on regular lots I was getting too many of my families with some money moving into them, but they have their own nice mansions and I want these particular ones to be more of an apartment. What I liked about the apartment feature was that I could place sims in Build Mode there and they don't have to have tons of cash. But if it's just going to keep messing with my regular homes I may just give that up.
TadOlsen - thanks for the info, I may check into that. :)

Roommate Services ???

Is there a way to stop random sims from becoming roomates?
During my recent save, I created a family, started to play the family, and suddenly, a bunch of random sims barge in as roomates?  The only thing I tweak in my game is the same-sax/teen pregnancy options.  Am I doing something wrong?

If you have a handle on the Apartment lot type, then things should be fine and you shouldn't have issues with the Roommates service bleeding into your Regular lots. I've never experienced that, but then I never use the formal Apartment lot type on purpose. Here is where you might want to try the mod that Tad recommends to see if it helps solve the issue or else, as you said, not use that lot type elsewhere in town.

Hi there. I know this sounds like the same issue as the OP's, but it might not be and might have deserved its own thread. But regardless, is the lot in question as viewed in Edit Town a Residential-Apartment type of lot or is it showing as Residential-Regular? And can you have a sim call up on Services and cancel the town's Roommate service?

First off - I am okay with FrigidChick's post being here, it seems like a very similar topic, but that is really up to you moderators because I've made that mistake before and I don't always know. If I were searching about roommate issues I'd come to any thread that is titled roommates. But that's just me. :-)

Igazor - I suppose I will just deal with it, I played some more today and it seems like it only happens when my active sim moves or I have spent a lot of time in Edit Town.  When I began the game today it was still disabled, but I had him move into a nicer home and it was on again. So yes, it's likely I'm triggering the roommate thing by placing those apartment lots. Also, it appears I was wrong, I had a family move into one of my apartment buildings because "they'd aquired some wealth" according to the SP status updates from my sims friends. So I guess it doesn't really work, but it does seem to work better than not having them. I can just deal with it since I really don't switch homes all that often. I can just make sure that I check each time I switch. It doesn't seem to be on for anyone who's not active, in other words no one is getting extra roommates around town who haven't asked to move in together or gotten married/partnered.
