Bad ads

Post by Cororon » October 7th, 2018, 9:35 pm

I wasn't prepared when I clicked on the NRaas bookmark and came here and saw the "OPEN" button, and I almost clicked it. It was just an ad, but for "EasyPDFcombine", a known browser hijacker. Now when I clicked on the link to go here to post another bad ad had a fake "START" button.

Just a heads-up to the members here. Be careful and don't click on these ads. TSR has the same type of ads, like fake "Download" buttons next to the real ones. I'm sure lots of simmers have clicked on the wrong buttons when trying to download CC from there.

Unfortunately I was unable to locate any for EasyPDFcombine in my manifest but I'll keep looking to take it out. The one with the start button clearly states it's for an email program that I was unable to locate any bad reviews about so unless people aren't reading (which I can't control) I don't see an issue with it. I don't have them in deceptive locations and they clearly look like they are unrelated to me.

Ok it did finally show up and I blocked it. I also took out a few of the start button ads that were different than the one I saw above and were also for the PDF tool as well as one that was very vague about driver downloads. If you see more let me know and try to be specific so I can find them in the 1,000+ in rotation.

Great!

Yeah, the site is new and I haven't been on here much yet, but I can report the bad ads I see to you directly. Sometimes they are specific for the country one lives in, so I guess we'll often see different ads depending on whee we live. On TSR there were fake ads for prizes one could win and pretended that it was a cooperation with swedish store chains. Nasty email harvesters those ones. I reported it to the ad service company and they removed them after I provided evidence and I had also contacted the store chains mentioned in those ads.

Oh, one idea may be to mark the spots where the ads are with the word "Advertisement". Not sure how it's done, but many sites have that. And then the risk of people mistaking the "Download" button some ads have to be a part of NRaas is minimized.

"YourTemplateFinder" is another one, and it's been identified by Malwarebytes as a new tab/browser hijacker.

I am using an Ad Blocker, so I didn't see these ads. Just wondering: do we get revenue from these ads showing up or are they a condition of hosting here? Thanks!

Another bad one has an "OPEN" button, plus the text "Start Download - View PDF", and the site it's promoting is free.fromdoctopdf.com. I tried to post a pic, but it didn't work.

I have Ad Blocker disabled for sites I want to support.

I'm only guessing but from what I know of other sites the Ads help generate revenue to pay for the server costs and maintenance.
