Game stuck while purging homeless

Post by Hekateras » March 4th, 2017, 8:09 am

Hello, this isn't really an issue with the mod but I'm looking for advice. I've been playing in the same town for quite a while, and while I have several mods, including Overwatch, I've had the nightly Homeless Clean-Up disabled. As a result, I now have a pool of over 4000 homeless Sims and would like to get rid of them. The problem is that my PC or game can't seem to handle it. If I enable the nightly cleanup, the game gets stuck at the time of the Overwatch alarm, but instead of lasting some seconds, I've waited nearly an hour without result. Note: the game doesn't actually freeze, it just gets stuck as it normally does during cleanup, so obviously the mod is trying to implement the clean-up, but presumably because of the huge pool, it's not quite able to get there. (Even loading up the LIST of the homeless in the mod menu takes ages, and forget thumbnails on those.) Trying to clean them up via Master Controller / Total Annihilation / Homeless Non Service achieves the same non-result.
Any suggestions on how to approach this problem? In theory, it should be okay if I can find a way to delete the Homeless sims a few at a time rather than all at the same time. I've been looking for an option to limit the maximum pool size (so I could bring it down in chunks, having the game delete the superfluous sims) but haven't been able to find such an option in any of the mods. (Basically I need something like Register's option to limit the number of Service sims in a pool, but for Homeless Non Service.)

Hi there, and welcome to NRaas.

I would say you have a challenge on your hands, there (though you didn't need me to tell you this). I play without OW's cleanup or SP' manage the homeless functions and never see more than 30 or 40 of them at most accumulating in one world before taking action on a few of them myself. If you run, on City Hall, NRaas > MC > Demographics > Population > "X" to dismiss the filter, does it really report that you have 4,000 homeless on the results screen next to residents and service?

Homeless non-service aren't like service pool sims. Although not residents, each one is a full-fledged sim with history, potentially a family tree, etc. There is no function I can think of that would allow you to purge that many of them all at once and allow your game to be able to recover from the massive amount of data removal that would ensue in an orderly manner. If you really do have that many in this world, and they aren't being listed from other connected worlds in your game, I would probably begin using MC to TA them selectively in much smaller batches such as 20 or 30 at a time, let the game clock run for a short while after each, do a Save As, quit completely to the desktop (or Origin if 1.69) and reload, also with ErrorTrap in place to let the cleanup conclude. Then continue with the next batch. But again, I would want to make sure these sims are really associated with the currently being played world and not showing up on the listings even though they are really in France, Uni, Oasis, or a Traveler mod connected world. Trying to TA foreign sims who are really in foreign worlds like that probably isn't going to be very successful either.

(Looking over my response)

This isn't going to help with cleanup at all, but more for prevention. By any chance are you using Register and do you have either LN or Ambitions "missing" from your EPs being played? There is a bug in the current full release that is known to overspawn homeless sims for players that do not have both EPs. It is fixed in what is currently the beta testing version of Register, v81 available here.
